I seem to recall that there is only one wing tube sleeve - this is then cut in half for the 2 wing panels.

I will pull the tubes & sleeves from my sealed kit this evening and post a picture. Work sure interferes with building.

I am currently getting my 27% Giles done so I will have space for the Extra. I am not doing the built-up wings, stab and fin but have cut and sheeted foam. I might just do this for the Extra as well as it goes much quicker than built-up.

It will be interesting to see what you come up with. Here is a picture of what i received. It looks like enough sleeve for one wing panel and probably the short section in the fuse. Foam sounds interesting, wonder if there would be a weight penalty.

Dang... a multiple build thread sounds like alot of fun.. I'm in no position unfortunately at this point to participate.. I've got other projects I really need to get with, and done before I take on this plane.. For me its probably best that I have full concentration by the time I get to it. I will be following along, and hopefully seeing pics of progress and such... These are such nice models in my opinion.. pretty much the epitomy of what RC modeling is all about. So carry on... and have a great Holiday season.. If I do get a chance to jump in and get her done, I surely will.

Thanks again for your help Bliksem. There are still some great folks out there. DGrant please jump in any time, more opions, ideas, etc. are always valuable. Attached are a couple of pics of the framed up horizontal stabs and rudders. I am still kickin' the tires on what to use for control horns. Leaning towards Hitec HS-5485HB standard digital servos. The stab and rudder assemblies each weigh slightly over 8 ounces each.... too heavy. Has there been any issues with achieving the proper CG on this plane? The current plan is to use a Zenoah GT-80, perhaps not the optimum, but it is what is available for now. It is a heavy engine that should help with any CG issues.

Short update. Not very exciting stuff, but the skins have been made for the vertical stabilizer and rudder. I use the tape and wood glue method. For me it works better than ca'ing the joints. The ca becomes too hard to sand and too difficult to make seemless. If anyone would like an explanation on the process just let me know, it is very simple.

I strongly suggest the use of metal geared servos of at least 120 oz of torque. It's usually vibration that will kill the plastic gears and not the flight loads.

Thanks for the tip, hadn't thought about the vibration factor. Back to the catalog for more servo shopping.
Hey Bliksem, do you know the overall width of your DLE 111 with the caps on? If you don't know right off it is ok. I can contact one of the dealers. I bought the GT-80 for a Ziroli Hellcat knowing it was enough power and would fit inside the cowl. I have had to backburner that project for a while. But if the DLE 111 will fit the Hellcat i am thinking of selling the GT-80 and getting a 111.

I'm not sure of the exact distance between caps but the width of the engine is 10.04" The caps most likely add about 1" to the total as they are at a downward angle. This engine fits in the Extra cowl with plenty of space to spare. The GT-80 and the DLE-111 are almost exactly the same widths, BTW.

Vertical stab is framed up. By the way, the dimensions shown in the instruction book for cutting the fin and rudder sheeting are not correct, confirm those dimensions with the plans. Weight as shown is 3 ounces, that is more like it.

Vertical stabilizer (fin) and rudder are now framed up and hinged at a total of 5.7 ounces, not bad. One really needs to watch the wood in this kit and replace sheets and sticks that are too heavy. I have been tempted to rebuild the horizontal stabs due to the weight but in the interest of time will probably not do that with this one. A pet pieve of mine is having to replace kit wood but sometimes it is needed. So far the parts fit, plans and instructions are very good. One minor issue is the rudder leading edge top hinge block needs to be cut down from 5/8" wide to 3/8" wide to fit inside the rudder sheeting. I thought i would mention this only that it might save one of you from having to back track a little like i did.

Some more progress. Actually per the instruction book, the wing panels should be next but due to their size my building board is not wide enough. Tomorrow i will be off to Home Depot to remedy that and get some materials for the "honey do" project that is also in the works. In the mean time i started framing up the center box for the fuse. Bilksem are you about ready to start on yours? It is feeling lonely in this forum.

I was messing around with the GP Simulator yesterday. Stumbled on to this plane .  And fell in love with this plane.

Bliksem may be able to answer your question on how this 330 compares to the simulator. I can tell you that the 2 different brands of Extra's that i have are both great flyers, the Goldberg and the Great Planes Patty Wagstaff arf. As far as the different Extras, mostly it is wing placement, horsepower, i.e. 300 hp versus 330 hp and whether it is a single seat or dual seat version. Today the two fuse center box sides were attached to the basic formers. Nothing is glued yet, i wanted to be sure that it was all straight and true and that it is. It does sit upside down on the building board. The pictures are a bit deceiving in that it almost looks like it is upright and a cabin model.

This thread is almost 10yrs old by the first post.. I'm hoping your build is getting out there... as some might think its the same old thread.. but this build you have going on is very worthy of updating the title of this thread.... just a thought there.. your work is very good, and alot of people might like to see it.. and the title doesn't say theres actually a "new build" going on.. and it going fast too.

Bliksem, what are your thoughts regarding the lightening holes in the wing ribs, glue them in or take them out? I know ribs do not add much strength but was wondering what you are going to do on your next one.\
Edit: How about glueing in the ones that also carry the wing tube and removing the ones on the outer ribs past the wing tube?

If I were building this, I would glue the peices back in forward of the spars. I had an ARF 42% Extra a couple years back and the ribs forward of the spar had an issue splitting in this area.
