I have a YS 45 that is crying for a new home. I was thinking about the Laser 3D. Any comments about this combo or the plane in general.

YS 45 puts out 1.5hp with the standard YS muffler.
YS 63 puts out 1.5hp with the standard YS muffler.
With a tuned pipe the 45 can put out more power. I would go with the YS45 since you have it already.

The 45 is a very good choice but the 63 will be able to swing a bigger prop with more lower end torque and better low end throttle response. If I had the 45 already I would just use it.

I'm running an OS .70 FS in my laser, and based on the horsepower you guy's posted for the YS .45, I think that the 45 will be a great choice. How much does the 45 weigh?
Ounces in this plane mean a lot, so if you can save a half a pound with the same (or more) power, that's what I would do.
The worst that can happen is that you will have a blast with the plane, and maybe want for a little more power at times.
I say build it, put in the 45 and fly the hell out of it!!!

If you go with the stock YS muffler then the Laser 3D would be fine but not over powered. To make the YS really shine it runs best with the Performance Specialty Ultra Thrust muffler but it tends to have peaky powerband that won't suit the Laser 3D. A good trade off and a great combanation is the YS/Ultra Thrust in a Sig Sonething Extra, still a lasercut kit but more suited to the power band of the YS. I had that combo and it was awesome! I've also done the Laser 3D with an OS .50.
Either way you go, run a low pitched prop, 12.25X3.75 APC works great with either combo .
Good luck,
Rob

Regardless of the (small) weight difference, I would take the 4-stroke route. I have Saito 72 in mine -- Ys 63 would be still a better option.
All the top 3D fliers around the word use 4-strokes in plane category. Take a look in the web. Ys 63 is the most widely used. Why think differently?
These 4-strokes have no shortage of power and their reliability and throttle response are superior.

I do not think all top 3D pilots use YS63 if you do not consider CPLR or Somenzini top 3D pilots.
CPLR uses a YS 45 a 2 stroke in his Madness Somenzini uses a YS 45 in his Hovering Cobra. Once again if you have the YS 45 use it. If you want to buy a new engine for the plane than get a 4 stroke, but the YS 45 is enough for that airplane.
