Default UCD and Saito 100 owners. Question about carb position?

After hearing rave reviews of this combo, I've put mine together. But I've noticed something. the carb on the saito is at least 1/2 inch below the center line on the tank. I haven't test run the engine yet, but I'm wondering if this is going to be a big problem?

I would assume everyone elses Saito 100 is also positioned below the tank center line unless you'lve moved the engine mount.

Comments?

Default Saito 100 position

I put mine in upright without altering the mount position. It runs great (my chief concern) and doesn't look so bad. Had to flip the carb around to keep the same cable position.

You have any pics?

Cable position? What do you mean? Are you talking about throttle? With my Saito 100 I had to drill a new throttle hole throught he front of the firewall becuase the supplied hole was on the wrong side. So if I would've mounted my engine upright the factory hole probably would've worked.

The carb on the Saito can be turned 180 degrees. So if the throttle linkage hole is on the left side, you can rotate the carb around and the needle would be on the opposite side. I will post a picture of mine tonight.

You are correct. Unfortunately I was not aware of this at the time I mounted the engine and cut my cowling. The funny thing is I cut another hole on the opposite side of the firewall and it worked really well. In fact, I feel it will work better in that position because the throttle arm will not be taking up as much realistate near the back-center of the engine (where the fuel lines run). The throttle arm ends up out the outer enge of the engine near the cowl. This seems to free up the cowling area for things such as fuel lines and remote glow fittings.

I'm not really sure if it will work any better, but it definately won't make things worse.

Default UCD Upright?

What mod do you have to make to mount the saito upright on the ucd? Does it stick out the top very far? What are the advantages to this mounting, besides carb/ tank placement? Anyone else do this?

Default Upright engine

I'm just prejudiced against inverted mounts. I know it can be done, but the amount of engine-tweaking required annoys me.

No modifications were necessary, except flipping the carb and cutting a hole in the top of the cowl for the head, instead of in the side for the muffler. I'll send a pic tonight, if possible. Not the most beautiful thing in the world, but beauty's pretty low on my priority list for this plane.

I am planning to mount my Saito 100 in my UCD3D upright with those beautiful golden valve covers sticking straight up out of the top of the cowl. I think it will be COOL looking!

Default Maiden flight

Yep, it's been flown. Only had a coupla flyable days since Chistmas here. Best I can tell is it can do everything as advertised...limited only by the skill of the pilot (which in my case is a considerable limitation.) You can really yank it around with that HUGE tail moment.
