Prop for GT80 on a Sukhoi
I'm trying to figure out what prop to put on a Hanger 9 Sukhoi with a GT80. I'm turning 6200 RPMs with a Zinger 24x10 and the plane won't hover. I've done searches in this forum and started a thread in Giant Scale forum and can't find any help. I'm thinking I need a 24x8 or a 24x6. Does anyone have any experience with this? What RPMs should I look for? What prop do you use. This is a great plane and engine but without some more omph I'll have to move on(or order different engine).
Thanks
Phil

Prop for GT80 on a Sukhoi
Phil,
I have a H9 Extra with a GT-80. It weighs 27 pounds empty.Your Sukhoi should be a couple of pounds lighter than that. The GT80 engine is an excellent engine for these planes but there is a thing or 2 you need to do.First of all, either junk or drill out the stock mufflers on the GT80 if you havent already done so.This will give you a big power boost. With aftermarket mufflers, mine will turn a Menz 24x10 at 7,040 rpm and a Fuchs 24x10 carbon fiber prop at 6,840.I could hover at about 5/8ths throttle. I swithced to a 26X8 APC which it turns at 6,840 and I can hover below half throttle. It also pulls from a hover with authority. But it should;that figures out to be over 60 pounds of thrust. It took about 5 gallons of fuel for the engine to start coming on really strong. The 26x8 also seems to help the plane maintain a more constant speed in level flight. I am truly pleased with this combination.Good luck! Rusty

I agree with Rusty, do something with the mufflers. I used J&A Peacekeepers on mine and turned a Mejzlik 24x10 at 7100 RPM. I also used a 24X8 Menz S, and it worked very well but would rip in the air. The Mejzlik worked as well and was much more quiet.

I suggest you to buy a good brand muffler, something like a Bisson or a J & A Engineering... I have a B&B and is to heavy...light is better for these planes...

I have a Bisson pitts style muffler. Will check to see if there is any restriction. Also, I've ordered a Mejzlik 24x10. Should be here for the weekend.
Thanks, Phil

Prop for GT80 on a Sukhoi
I've been flying the H9 Sukhoi with a GT-80 for about 4 months now. The engine is still getting stronger. It turns a Bolly 24x10 at 7450 RPM and a Menz 24x10 right at 7100 RPM. The Menz definately flies this plane with much more authority and has better hovering characteristics. Up line maneuvers are also much improved with the Menz over the Bolly. Down line braking is about the same. Originally, I ran the stock mufflers with the baffles drilled out like the Sukhoi instructions mention doing. Now, I'm running the Slimline mufflers with smoke inserts and think the motor is a bit stronger than with the drilled out stock mufflers. Hope this helps and gives you a bit more data.

RE: Prop for GT80 on a Sukhoi
Ouch, I dont see why zenoah cant make that engine perform... My zdz80 is half the weight and twice the power.... Mine hovers at about 1/3 throttle...
Buddy had a GT80 in a H9 extra, not a power house at all, great for IMAC, but lacking for pull up power..
I have flown a Sukhoi with the GT, it flew nice, and is still alot of fun, but I dont see why anyone would buy one new.. .02

Thanks for the reply, I'm using a Bolly 24 x 10 and it takes about 3/4 throttle to hover.
