You probably shouldnt take me too seriously but i would personaly go with the edge 540t, i know my friend has a 33% aeroworks edge 540 and it is great for 3d, i dont know how well the 540 would compare to the 540t but thats just my thoughts.

IMHO I believe that the 540 is better for 3d work. You will get alot of people believing that the extra is because it has been around longer and proven itself, and more people are aware of its capabilites. This is one of those question like Pepsi or Coke. There may not be one true answer but I would go with the edge 540. It also depends on who makes the aircraft and the modifications that have been done to it.

Hanger 9 is calling the 540 the new aerocatic super plane and I truly believe it is. And yes I saw the pics about 2 min ago. Looks cool.

I have a kit version of the 105" Aeroworks 540T and a 40% 3W 330S. To me, the 330 is a smooth and graceful aerobatic flyer, while the 540 is a wring it out 3D go kart! Although the planes will cross over and do both kinds of flying, I like the Edge better for 3D.

I own 2 Extra 330Ls and they seem to be the best IMAC and 3D plane I have flown. I owned a H9 Edge, and it was ok, but does not compare to the DP Extra 330L I fly now. My FiberClassics 35%is the smoothest flying plane I have EVER flown. I found on the Edges that they like to pitch a lot, whether its in IMAC of 3D, they seem too pitchy. I flew a Carden 40% Edge, and I was fine for IMAC, but I didnt 3D it at all. The H9 Edge has a harrier problem, the wings wont stay level. I dont know why, it may just be the design of that plane. I supposedly have a DP Edge on the way, so we'll see how that flies compared to the Extra. Right now, my vote is for the Extra. I am pondering getting a 39%, and it would not be an Edge. Id prolly get the AW 330L. The DP Edge should be a good plane though, we'll see.

Whatever you do, dont get a hangar 9 edge... they are terrible. theyre far too heavy for the wing area, and harriers are uncomfortable, waterfalls only just possible unless you have LOADS of power...
I'd personally take an Extra 330 over an Edge any day, having flown both,
WHY DO YOU THINK THERE ARE FAR MORE EXTRAS THAN EDGES AT THE TOC!!!??

Thanks All
I have a h9 edge with a moki 1.8 now it's ok but I just picked up
a FPE 2.4 and have read a lot of good things about the DP extra
but the new DP 540T sure looks nice going to get one of the two
as soon as i make up my mind

The Extra 330 IMO is a better candidate for an all around good flying airplane. If ALL you want is 3d, the edge might be better, but in that sense, why not just get a funfly or something if all you want is 3d. But the Extra line of airplanes are top class. Look at the TOC for example, ONE Edge was at toc, and like 6 or 7 Extras were at toc. That should answer the question right there....

the question asked is what is better for 3D work. As you can see from most of the responses is the Edge 540.....for 3D work. As far as the reference to the TOC planes, you need to keep in mind they are required to fly sequence patterns as well, so I think (I know) that is why you see all of the Extra's. If you look at the TOP 3D pilots around the country you see Edge 540's as the plane of choice. The guy asking the question needs to decide if 3D is his major need to be filled by this plane choice. If so, the Edge hands down.....if he plans on making it to the top level of IMAC type of flying then the Extra is a better choice....
I am going a different route. I fly a Cap and a Edge. Best of both worlds, but doing it with two planes. I'll have an Extra (Probably a TBM) next year....

There is a difference in the way the two planes fly by design. The Edge is better at tumbling and it's stalls are far more aggressive than the Extra. The Extra flies a better groove and is much smoother to control inputs, this makes the plane present itself better. The Extra is also not as likley to wing rock in elevators or harriers and all this assumes a similar set-up on both planes. The one that is best for 3-D is the one YOU are the most comfortable with, they are both great flying aircraft.

Yes, get an edge for 3D its the best no question. It is not fair to say that an edge sucks based on what u have experienced with the Hanger 9. I had a hangar9 and it sucked.
Welsh3d - The reason you see more extras than edges at TOC is because TOC is IMAC. The only 3D they do is in their freestyle, which is only a small fraction of the total amount of flying they do while at TOC. An extra is better for IMAC and an edge is better for 3D...period.

IMHO I would get A Troy Built Extra 260 the 3D is awesome. the light weight of the troybuilt makes it incredible in 3d flight weight on mine is 22 pounds 10 ounces with dual receivers and batteries DA 100 for power. The mid wing of the 260 without the straight leading edge gives you the better of 2 airplanes extra and edge. I base this on the fact of owning and flown the following35% FC extra 330l ,aeroworks 40% edge,42% Godfrey G202, aeroworks extra 300l 37%, Carden 35% cap, Carden G300, 30% carden Extra, and flown the following aeroworks edge arf, Hanger nine extra but I would put the 35% FC Extra at #2 and should be able to comment on the 40 % FC Extra in a couple of weeks it should be ready to fly.

I don't think most will admit it, but I think the Extra pilots think the Edge is ugly. The Edge is also more sensitive (unstable?) and the Extra appears smother. Oh, my H9 Edge did not suck. Great flying plane, just,......ugly

the one thing that i truly love in the design of the edge is the angled trailing edge and the flat leading edge, it looks so nice and aerodynamic. i hate the leading and trailing edges on the extra. there needs to be some straight lines on a plane. and i aint talking stealth fighter.
but aside from all that i love the edge they are completly not ugly.
extras are discusting.

Ugly!!! I love the looks of an Edge(and the Extra)
The edge looks so "exotic" and aggressive, all in one package. Of course, that just IMO

Philip

I think the Edge 540 is a very unique and stylish looking plane. I like the extra very much also. I agree that the extra is better for IMAC and the Edge is better for 3D. but they both can do both IMAC and 3D. I presonally don't like the edge 540T I think the canopy is too long and big. I love the looks of the 540.
