Default Funtana Frankenstein Build

wel i crashed my funtana 40 last fall and i had 2 wings for it just sitting in my basement then my brother bought an omp katana v2 which gave me an idea. so i separated the one piece wing into two pieces by taking out the central piece that was used for joining and mounting to the fiselage of my funtana 40. i then bulked up the ends of bothe wings to toughen them up with the same size wood so tthe wings werent two different length. now back to the omp katana. i made a template for the fuselage on some cardboard and i am ready to start making the fuselage ( i already have a rudder w/stab and elevater w/stab in perfect condition and the wing is perfect. i test fitted the pieces to my brothers katana and they fit so it should work onece im all done.

i was just wondering if instead of making all the curved edges if it would fly ok with squared edges because it will be hard to bend all of the wood to make the curves...im impatient when it comes to holding wood over a boiling kettle/pot of water. this plane is an experiment more than anything and im not expecting anything great but hey ya never know. if anyone would know if i could square up those edges without screwing up the aerodynamics id appreciate the imput. Thanks.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. Have any pictures?

I was wondering if on the fuselage i could square up the curved edges instead of sitting over a kettle for a week bending the wood. which is the only way i knnow how to bend the wood. i just think it would be much easier to make the edges straighter as long as it wont affect the flight

I still dont understand what you are saying. Being that the fuse is flat what are you trying to avoid by not bending? Are you planning on adding thickness to the fuse? You cut out a template I assume you are going to make this a flat profile plane. Need some more detail on what you are trying to do.

Bending balsa is not hard you just need to make sure the grain of wood is going in right way. It acts like a hinge.

on the fuselage it bends around. i know it is flat but the way im making it is laying the balsa around the perimeter of it and putting sheeting over it to make it thicker. but looking at my template in the picture there is lots of curves in it and i was wondering if i could make them straight.

somewhat like this...not exactly like this but somewhat.

I see, yes straight will work. It would only effect the looks, also it will still fly the same.

Another idea is to lay thicker balsa around the edges. Then you really wouldnt need any sheeting. Matter fact I think on the profiles I built before didnt have any sheeting around the edges.

so did you just make the outline then brace it inside the outline? and what do you think of the squared edges

Yeah put basla around the edges and hardwood in nose. also some cross pieces in middle for strength. You may find a good build on an OMP prifle and you will see how the inside of a profile fuse looks like

here is a good build on a profile. Should be of some help. Lots of good info in the profile section. Many people have out builds with many pictures in them
