Default Peak Edge540 76" + Peak 45cc arrived

My first entry into the gas arena arrived today !! A Peak Edge540 76" + Peak 45cc.

I've been tied up for a long time trying to decide, it's all so confusing having so many options. Anyway, cost played a big part and in the end I settled on this combo. I'm sort of kicking myself that I didn't get the DL50 as it's much stronger and lighter than the 45cc, oh well.

I haven't built many planes before, in fact this is only my 4th. I've previously had (and still got in 1 piece) a World Models trainer (name escapes me), a VMAR extreme stick, a PA Bad Boy and now this one.

This Edge is the 76" version, not to be confused with the 70" version, which there are many posts on RCU about.

Peak Edge540 28%
Wingspan: 76" (1930mm)
Length: 71" (1800mm)
Wing area: 1147 sq.in (74 sq.dm)
Weight: 11.5-12.8 lbs (5.2-5.8 kg)

If the plane came out at the top end of the weight then the wing loading would be 25.71 oz/ft which is reasonable and there is plenty of room for cutting back the weight. The aluminium landing gear and wing tubes can be replaced with carbon for a start, the ones supplied are HEAVY....

The manual doesn't have any minimum recommendations for the servo torque so I think I will need a bit of advice here. I was thinking HS-645 or HS-5645 for ailerons and elevators, a single HS-5955TG for rudder (pull-pull system) and just a standard for throttle.

I didn't really know what I was expecting when I opened the box, being a relatively cheap plane (compared to prices in AUS at least) I wasn't hoping for too much. I was pleasantly surprised, the plane looks great quality. The covering is excellent, glue joints seem reasonable, The usual areas will be beefed up a bit though - engine box etc. Supplied hardware looks ok, some will be replaced, some will be used, I'll decide as I go along what I'm not happy with.

The long journey over from China tooks it's toll though. The box was partly squashed when it arrived and the fuselage suffered some damage unforutnately. I do have to say though, the cardboard used on the box was extremely thick so the courier companies must have knocked it around some to split it like it was. The fuselage has a snapped balsa stringer near the front, the top decking at the rear is slightly squashed and the canopy was completely cracked. I can fix the snapped balsa stringer and the decking but the canopy needs to be replaced. I've emailed Peak about it so hopefully they will send out a new canopy, we'll see what happens.

Now onto the good stuff !!! I'll post up some pictures and keep updating as a build thread if anyone takes interest. Build process will be slow though, I've still got a lot of stuff to get to complete the model plus there's the usual parts on the plane that we all like to replace.

Now if I could just post pics, that would be good !!! Is there a FAQ somewhere for this, I couldn't find one.

Here are some pics of the damage done during transport. I really don't blame Peak for this as the box was very well packed. The courier companies knocked it around some for it to split like it did

Yeah, everything I've gotten from Peak Models has had some sort of damage done to it by the mail system.

I was *seriously* thinking about buying one of these but don't know that I could bear the heartbreak of having it all ready to go -- but for a canopy. I've already got one 50cc plane here with its canopy held together by duct tape.

I'm seriously thinking about building a vacuum table and moulding my own from PETG.

I just had a very prompt email reply from Peak regarding the damage. They are going to send me out a new canopy as soon as possible. Great news !!!!

I took a few photos today of the package, so if anyones interested you can go here and take a look: [link=http://s203.photobucket.com/albums/aa175/fjaust/]Edge540 photos[/link]

Any advice on the servos. The manual just says use hi-torque, it doesn't give any minimum figures. I'm guessing these should be enough but not 100% sure.

I went to the PeakModel site and took a look at their Giles 76" brother to your Edge [I already have a Edge 540]. I,m a little reluctant to move forward with a purchase as Canada is a lot further for the mail system or couriers to have time to damage the contants of the box. Is there any other way as in Distributors of these planes? Oh by the way, I have gone with JR 8231 or 9411,s without any problems in 2M planes in the past.

thx Dave

I have an Edge with a Brillelli 46cc in the nose. I really like the combination. I had a CF landing gear and wing tube ( the ones included were quite heavy ) and on my postal scale it shows 12lb 00oz .
Mine came unharmed and besides the pests infected box ( see pic ) I had no major problems building it.

It needs 2 and you should install the best servos you can afford. You could probably use a bellcrank but I would not go that route.

Sounds good.Their site must be down, havent been able to get on for some time.
For servos, you can use the 645's all around, put them on 6 volt and its plenty of power and reliabilty. They are tough.
If your budget allows the 5645 are better, but some said centering was an issue, but not with the ones I have used.
Then there are the 5985 some say a better but pricier servo. There is no need to get spendy on a 5955TG at all for this airframe.

I got it and i almost finished it...
I used
1 HS-5645=rudder
2 HS-5625=elevator
2 HS-645=aileron
1 HS-635=throttle
1 HS-322=choke

Engine=Roto 35Vi
prop=19X8 wood
Mechanical kill switch and choke..No electronic kill switch!

I use a Powerbox Digi-switch with a lipo 7,4V 2200mAh!
How do you see this setup?
How many flight will i do before recharge?
Thank you?

I'm thinking to put a DL50 on it with a 22X8 prop? What do you think abou it?Is it possible to destroy the aircraft?Of course i'll make very good throttle management...
ROTO 35vi is little without tuned pipe and i prefer to sell it or use it on a scale plane!!

Yes, me too. I have a spare SPE40 sitting on my desk and there's a good offer at 249 Euros for this plane from Lindinger........
