It sounds like you tried using the supplied glowplug with your Saito 72 , this won't work . I think you owe it to yourself to try the engine with an OS type F plug before you give it away . I'd also be curious to hear what kind of fuel you were using .
Good Luck

Thanks Maj. Crash

Kind advice always accepted.

I did run the supplied glow plug for break-in and the first few flights, but i'm not sure what i have in there now. Could be the Fox 4 stroke, or the OS F. It has a small "H" stamped on the side if that helps identify it.

Flame outs were pretty random. Some throttleing down in flight, others while near full throttle just after take off, (man i hate those!) others while hovering.

I run Byrons 10% nitro/ 18% Castor/synth and add 3 ounces of castor to each gallon.

It has always been run pretty rich (visible trail), has stupendous compression, and i always inject a huge amount of Marvel oil after a day of cursing... er... flying. The valves have been adjusted twice, currently tappet gaps are at 0.006 inch ( they have loosened up a little again, or maybe were last adjusted when the engine was warm?)

anything sound like a problem?

Ditto maj crash. The plug it came with was good for breakin. Then it started acting up till I put in an OS F. It has an "F" on the side. It hasn't quit sence, BUT DON"T ET TO LEAN.

Default Plugs and Fuel

The plug issue seems to be rather cut and dry , the OS type F plug works . I've heard the YS plug also works , in YS engines at least . I have one , but haven't tried it yet , the OS works so good I'm reluctant to mess with it . I can't say what kind of plug has an "H" on it , the OS has a "F" stamped on it .
Now for the sticky topic of fuel . Nitro is your friend , it gives you a much more reliable idle at lower RPM than low nitro fuels . I choose to run 30% in YS engines for the power , and use 20% in my Saito engines for a good idle and transition , I suppose it doesn't hurt the top end either . I'll probably allenate many people now , but I'll carry on . I use Red Max fuel for many reasons . When I thought I knew more about fuel than the people who made it , they would mix up anything I asked for . Now I'm more conservative but continue to use it because of its good , consistent performance . When the brand you are using came on the market I could tell when a person was using it due to the engine dying right after breaking ground . I think they have changed their formula since then , and I have seen people successfully complete flights using it . I , however , would never use it and would recommend you try something like Powermaster , Wildcat or even Morgan's Omega would be better than what your using . I would also advise against using castor oil as it leaves heavy deposits on the valves , piston and combustion chamber . Both Saito and YS agree on this , can't remember what OS says . I do add four drops of Midas Touch oil to a gallon of fuel though . I figured it wasn't enough to hurt anything and on the same day , going from one jug without and one with , I saw a noticable increase in RPM . Midas Touch [or whatever they call it now] is marketed by Boca Bearing . Your use of after run oil certainly won't hurt , I don't do it any more as I feel Red Max gives me enough protection . Yuo can't do it with YS engines anyway . Saito bearings haven't lasted very long for me , the Saito 56 uses the same bearings as a OS 26 .
I've always set my valves with the guages that came with old OS engines , a .003" for a go guage and a .006" for a no go . Although your valves a looser than I would set them I don't belive it's contributing to any problems you're having .
I suggested those fuels not knowing what else is available in your area , I don't expect you to get Red Max . I do hope you get an OS "F" plug though. I know they're pricey but worth it .
Good Luck

Thanks Maj.

I can get Ohmega here. The folks at the LHS are pretty cool and just might order up some Red max for me, but I'll be out of town for a few weeks so i won't get to try it and the OS plug till next month. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again,

Spiff
