Flat out best motor for Magic Extra
Got a new Magic Extra and facing the critical decision of power. I've heard folks say, "get a hot .46" like webra, OS FX, YS, Enya CX. (Modeltech recommends Magnum...(?))
Which motor on the market really rocks the most?
Which gives best overall performance for this kit -- and why??
Thanks.

My buddy put an OS FS .70 and it has crazy vertical. hovers at just under 1/2 throttle. only thing is we have not yet had a chance to see what it can do since the engine mount broke on second flight when landing.
We are now cutting off the 2 front pieces of wood that goes beside the engine and just gonna mount a larger engine mount in nose without the balsa sides to it.
I am not sure this is the best set up but fun to have crazy vertical.

Saito 72 works great. With it, the plane balances at 4.25" behind LE. The instruction calls for 3.75", but this plane really flies best at like 4.75". The plane weighs 4.5 lb w/ Saito 72. The fit was tight, with no margin to spare. I don't know how an OS 70 Surpass would fit in there, as it's actually larger than Saito 72. As far as power, I had 13x4W @ 10,800 rpm, and it's more than enough for hover, pull-out, & knife edge loop. I will try 14x5N this week.
If using 2-stroke, I think any good 46~53 will do, swing the APC 12.25x3.75. Saito 72 is 17 oz including muffler, which is about the same as a 46 w/ stock muffler. If you can use lighter muffler and get the total weight down to 15 oz, it would help the CG to a more aft setting. Right now my RX pack is under the rudder servo. I might try to move it into the enclosed guided-pushrod compartment to move CG back.
YS 63 may not fit with the provided small, short motor mount due to the air chamber block. If you don't mind installing a larger motor mount and trim the side cheek panels, then YS 63 would be the perfect choice.
This plane is light, and it doesn't need as much power as normally would, so the engine selection criteria should emphasize size and weight, more than power.

A Thunder Tiger 46 pro works really well. Also the price of the TT46 is good also. The fit is right on. You only have to do a little cutting to get the needle valve to fit. The plane does everything with this engine. Do a search on the plane and you will find the long thread on this plane.

Thanks, guys.
I'm intrigued by the Irvine .53, so I'm going to give it a go. It weighs in at 18.2 oz. with muffler - so it sounds like aft mounting the RX pack and shifting reciever back will both help out. I'm also adding alum struts to strenghen horiz stabs.
It should be ready to fly this weekend - I can't wait!

I am running mine with a Ultrathrust muffler, and boy you are talking about power. This thing rocks. Have not tached it yet, but will do this weekend. My tach is broken, and have to borrow one. So far my engine was running on 10% Wildcat. I think it will run well also on 5%. But I added a shim yesterday, and it will be running on 20/20 fuel from now on. Let's see. Break in was very simple, and engine ran perfect from day one. I let it run rich for two 8 oz tanks on the ground, and then took her up to keep breaking in while flying. A little on the rich side, and it performs flawlessly. No flames out yet, except one time at the beginning where I set the engine to lean. Scared the s..... out of me because I was hovering about 30 feet high. I am running a APC 12x4 prop on mine, and it seems to love it.
Here is a tip, Hobby Barn has them for $118 + shipping. Killer deal, if not order them from "just engines" in the UK.

Thanks.
I've changed things up and my Irvine .53 is now going in a new Sig Somethin' Extra.
The Magic Extra is going to have to do with an OS .46 fx for now....

as with most planes, you must replace the landing gear in order to run a "proper" electric size prop on them. I don't mean to come off as a bigot,.. I have dozens of glow motors also,..but most everything I fly now is electric powered with nice sized props for efficiency rather than the little toothpicks you have to put on a glow motor. It's just a minor hassle that when you go for the greater performance of electric power, you have to put in a bit more work like making taller landing gear.

I got my Magic Xtra up in the air for the 1st time this past weekend -- immediately my favorite airplane.
OS SX .50. Conservatively, from a standing start, about a 10' runup to immediate unlimited virtical climb. Ask anyone who was at the Clarksburg Model Aviation field this weekend.

Hi Gary,
I have the motor. I was going to use in another project. I ordered the plane today. You wouldn't have any pictures of the battery and servo placement.
Thanks,
RD

OS .46FX for me
I've have mine powered with the OS .46 FX...easily enough power with practically unlimited veritcal. I went with the recommended prop of 12.25X3.75..seems to work great. Have fun!
What a pain to build, but fun to fly...with the proper mixes that is...lol..

I have the standard Hitec 600mah NICAD 4.8v pack up against the fuel tank former on the mid-deck. With the RX as far aft on the mid-deck as it can go and the switch installed just beside it, the CG is just aft of recommendation. I have yet to fully analyze the flight characteristics but initially she flies fantastic.

Gary Ill have to disagree with you, CG makes a big difference in how a plane flys or if its very extreme.........wont fly. I could give you a lengthy explanation about how it works, but just go take one of your planes and put the Cg very far forward and fly it........then move it back where it is supposed to be and fly it. You will notice the difference. I would tell you to move it aft but dont want to cause you to lose a plane. <grins> Happy flying!

Sean, how did you get the Saito 72 in the engine mount? I have tried to slip one in and it is so tight that I thought I would have to get a smaller engine. Did you modify the mount or fuse near the mount?

RE: Flat out best motor for Magic Extra
I have a Saito 56 w/ 13-4 APC prop, turns right about 10 grand WOT on the ground. I use CoolPower 25%. This engine is perfect because it only weighs 15.5 ozs. and makes PLENTY of power, also I can fly for 18 to 20 min. on an 8 oz. tank (Put in an 8 oz. Hayes, the stocker is a POS) !!! Pulls out of hover to unlimited vertical rolls or whatever you want to do! Sounds way cool too. I had to add about 4 oz. to tail and I have a steerable tailwheel also, but it doesn't weigh much more than the stock wire. My CG is about 5 in. back from LE and she flat spins like a dream, also made hovering alot easier.
Boy is this plane fun, especially w/ this engine!!
My 2 cents,
Scott
