Default 3D Plane for 3W-85 Engine

I would like some recommendations from the experienced 3D fliers out there.

I have a new style 3W-85 engine that I would like to use in an ARF for 3D practice. Also the plane will serve for a back up pattern plane for IMAC type flying, but I want the emphasis placed on the 3D qualities. I am interested in ARFs only, no kits. Please let me know which plane, and why you feel it would make a great 3D combination with my 3W-85.

Thanks.

Hey Don:

I think the H9 cap would be a very good combo. Had one with the old 3w 80 and it easily had unlimited vertical. The new 85 has more power and weighs over 1lb less. A friend I fly with also has the cap and a DA 100 with over 300 flights. It is ballistic and has way more power than he needs. The cap is very good for 3D and IMAC type flying.

The hangar 9 cap is the way to go. If you cant find a cap then you can get the sukhoi.
I second that spindoc.

Thanks to all that responded, except bradsummit!

wgeffon & Spindoc,

Since the 3W-85 is about in the middle weight wise from the 3w-80 and ZDZ-80, how will the plane balance for 3D? Will I have to add any weight ? (I just hate adding lead weight)

Also I looked on the Horizon site for replacement parts for the Cap and some of the items were out of stock. From past experience or form what you have heard, are the replacement parts going to be available for a while?

Any info you would like to share about set ups would be appreciated as I am strongly considering the CAP.

Awesome picture wgeffon, hope I can get to that level one year.

Thanks

Don,

If the motor is a little heavier than the ZDZ I dont see you needing to add lead in the tail.
My CG is slightly tail heavy with the ZDZ 80 and no lead.

These larger planes are much more CG tolerant than the smaller ones..

As for replacement parts, My guess is dont expect anything quickly. Since Horizon isnt carrying this plane anymore replacement parts arent very high on the priority list.

Also,
I have videos of my Cap at,

You all are forgetting about AeroWorks!!!!

33% Extra 330L ARF and 33% Edge 540T. Both are awesome planes!! I have the EDge with a 100 on pipes! What a combo!!!

Enjoy!!

Default H9 Cap

Hey Don:

The 3w 85 is the same weight as the DA 100 and the new 3W 106. You may have to add a little tail weight but not much. This plane does the tightest waterfalls I have seen. Great harriers. You have to work with torque rolls and it also flies sequence very well. The AW edge and extra are slightly larger and heavier but would also be good choices. I have the 31% AW Extra (same size as the H9 Cap) with the new 3W 106 and it is a rocket. However, I think the cap is a better choice for the 3W 85 and 3D since it is lighter.

Hi Spindoc,

Thanks for the reply. There is no doubt that the AW planes are great, but as you say I also feel they are a little on the large and heavy size for the 3W-85. While the H9 Cap is a small 33%er. I checked the weight of the 3W-85 and with the prop bolts, washer and plugs it weighs 5.2 lbs. So as you also said the CG should be good.

I have one question, you wrote that "You have to work with torque rolls". Can you elaborate on this some as I am very interested in the hovering / torque rolling ability of the plane.

I appreciate your time.

BTW for those considering the H9 Cap as I am, Chief has about 40 of the 100 left.

TR'ing the Cap isnt hard. It definately needs to be in the "sweet" spot for it to start spinning.
Slightly on its back and away it goes.....

With a reliable motor you'll be TR'ing and hovering on the deck in no time.

Default Torque Rolling

As Wayne said, it has to be in the sweet spot. I found the cap harder to get started than my Extra and Edge. Not that it is a problem, just took me a while to figure it out. I would not worry about it, this plane is fully 3D capable.

Sorry about the wrong info on the 3w 85. I could have sworn it was the same weight but after checking Cactus I see you are right. You should not need to add much, if any tail weight. Also, my buddy that has one with the DA 100 has over 300 flights on his and he flies it VERY hard. This plane is built to last. Looks like it has 20 to 30 flights!
