Default First time for smoke-using an OS 160

Just bought a new yak 74 from EF,going to put an OS 160 fx on it,probably will use a slmline pitts on it,since it has 2 fittings. Was thinking of using the showtime smoke system since it has its own battery that you can charge and doesnt pull off of receiver battery, what size tank should i run, need some help ,never done smoke before, any other suggestions would be nice too!!!

From what i know you need the high tempatures of gasoline engine to produce good clean smoke.
But i have little experince with smoke.

I had smoke in my Cmpro extra with saito 180. I was also using the slimline pitts and showtime pump. I heard that the 4 stroke run hotter than 2 stroke glow (not sure tho). Either way i was using a tank about the same size as the fuel tank. This gave me around 4mins to burn time on the smoke...it chews thru it fast. The smoke produced is nothing like that of a gasser tho. The density isnt that great, even on the ground. the smoke system and oil will add considerable weight. If i had my time over i would stay away from adding smoke to anythin less that a 50cc gasser. Just my 2c/

Pouring it into a regular muffler will do little. You need a smoke muffler or preheat the oil.Even with that, you will probably have little sucess. It wont belch out like a gasser, more like a thin stream.Probably not worth the pain.

Cameron im assuming you are refering to the slimline pitts with the smoker coil in it. This was the muffler i used and produced the results i listed.

the smoke won't be as thick and puffy as what you see on gas engines but if you can get it to work reasonably well on a 46ax, like i have seen vids of and the smoke was faint but noticible enough to say "my plane has a smoke system". A 160 should work ok once set up right

have you thought of using just crankcase pressure it could work just as effective and you will be saving weight.

this said you could get a ys 170 and run it slightly rich and "wala" continious smoke system

No it will not provide a sighnificant increase in exaust temp. I would pre heat the oil on the tips with a tightly wraped and insulated coild then run it up and inject it right at the manifold for the highest evaporation temp.

My buddy and I did a test on our own smoke setup for a old O.S. .40 we had laying around. And wow!!! For the people that say smoke doesn't work on 2strokes, I dunno.... Looked like a pretty big cloud of smoke to me!! We didn't use smoke oil though. We found diesel burns WAY better. I wish I had my video camera to show your guys. It was nothing like a 50cc gasser or anything but 10 times smokier than any rich 2-stroke I have seen! I was skeptical at first about it to and figured I would be disappointed but no way! I'm going to rig it up!

I'm going to order up my valve and nipples this week and I hope to have my smoke setup this weekend. I'll be running off crankcase pressure. Keep you guys posted.

here is a vid of smoke on a 40, not as good as the gassers but it works, a 160 should be better. they definitely work on these smaller engines
