Default Need a 3D plane

I have been looking for a 3D plane. I have a funtana s40 with a saito 82 have only flown it once but it looks very promising. I bought it used. In a few months I am wanting to get a slighlty bigger 3D plane but am lost on what is good and whats not. I dont really want something like a Frenzy Im leaning more towards scale like extra, edge, yak, etc. I do not want a profile at all. I was looking at getting the Aeroworks yak .90-1.20 but for about 500 more I could probably have a 50cc plane. I like the idea of gas rather than nitro but I have never used it so I would like to stay with nitro unless theres is a really good gasser plane with a 26cc that someone could recommend. Im on a budget so price matters. I was looking at the Seagull Edge 60 but was wondering how they perform and how the quality is. I have read up on 26cc engines but they seem hit or miss on the lower costs ones. Also a gas on planes that size just seems like it will be too heavy.if you guys could just let me know some options even setups and all that. Once again I do not want a profile though I understand theyre great I just prefer the full fuse planes for looks. If anyone has a gasser setup on 26cc let me know how it is and how it performs 3D. Thanks for the help!!!!!

If you want a 3d gasser go 50cc. If you go with the 25% size you are better off sticking to glow for 3d. I had a 25% wild hare edge 540 with the evolution 26gt2 and performance for 3d was lacking. I switched it to an os 1.6 and it had crazy power.

look at [link=http://www.3dhobbyshop.com]3D Hobby Shop[/link] - they mainly focus on electric planes, but have couple that would suit your needs. The 57' Sukhoi would be great for the .82 Saito or they even have a large Extra 300 SHP and a Katana that will take 50cc gas motors.

I have one of their smaller Extra 300 SHPs and absolutely love it! The planes are definitely worth looking at.

NitroPlanes 69" Yak54 ($199.00 ARF) with a YS 1.10S 4-stroke or an OS 1.20AX 2-stroke. With a finished weight of 8lb 6oz, 3D Performance with the YS 1.10S is spectacular.

If you can still find one, the larger (76 inch) Ultra RC Giles 202 is one of the best 3d planes around for an OS 1.60 2-stroke glow. The Ultra RC Giles 202 in the picture below is powered by an MVVS 26cc gasser with a pipe and turns the same RPM as my OS 1.60 with a Pitt's muffler. The gasser weighs 12 oz more but is still a very good 3D performer. The pipe is the key to getting good performance out of the 26cc.

Wow those Nitro models look awesome for the price but that has me kind of worried. How is the quality. For those prices I would go with a 50cc plane probably.

The quality of the Nitro Planes 69" Yak 54 is excellent. There is an RCU thread on the nitro planes 50cc yak at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6521296/tm.htm. Your questions may be answered there.

The Seagull Edge 540 are excellent planes and you can't beat the price either! I have had mine for one season now and can say it is a well built and top quality ARF though the push rods are a little strange....... It flys extremly well and will do all the 3D you can throw at it. The only thing I did different to mine was, replaced the alum. gear with carbon fiber landing gear from the Funtana 100 and modified it to fit the Edge. I have a Saito 125 in mine and it flys unlimited verticals and about 1/4 throttle hovers. Here is a pic of my Edge . The carbon gear gave it about 3/4" to an inch more lift, but I also needed it, to swing a 17x5 prop as the original aluminum landing gear were pretty short.
If this is what you want and I noticed you mentioned it a few times, it's not a bad seconded 3D plane to have in my opinion. It's what I got. But its all about "to each his own!"

Im leaning towards the Edge more than anything i think. I will most likely replace the pushrods with some 4-40 stuff. Also I noticed that the Showtime 90 is cheaper than the Showtime 50. Whats up with that. Another reason Im leaning towrds the Edge is the scale look. I was just curious on how the 3D performance of the Edge was.

Do youself a big favor and go with the 50cc gas. the extreme flight Yak or Extra are very good planes. There are a lot of very good 50cc engines out right now at a good price try the DL 50, or the Area 51.

I really want to go 50cc but I have two problems. Im not sure if a 50cc will fit into my vehicle(S10 Blazer) and the price of the Edge Im looking at is $175 versus $600-$700 for a 50cc plane. I know about the DL engines a guy I fly with has one and is going to another one for the new plane he just got those engines seem to be great.EDIT:That got me thinking so I went out and measured from the back to the seats in my blazer and its only about 76 inches which would come up close to a foot short for most 50cc planes.

This is about as cheap as an Edge as your going to find for around $450. Its less than $600-$700 and they are top quality ARF'S as well. I had the Ultimate 10-300 and flew it for a while with a g-62, way to much engine and wanted a little less expensive of a plane to not have to worry about slaming in to the ground when pushing the envelope, as I am still in a learning curve with 3D, so I sold it.They are great planes and perfect for those light weight 50cc gas engines and there not that expensive. Check 'em out.

How about the Great Planes 27% extra330. Very nice flying, Fairly inexpensive, easy to see colors and will handle the DL50 with no problem. My airplane carrier is a 95' S-10 Blazer and it fits in there pretty easily.

Just a thought.

How much 3d flying have you done? If you are new to it then you should really stick to cheaper 40 size aircraft until you become more familiar with it. The 50 cc planes fly better but they break very easily if you are not up on flying 3d.

Im new at the 3D stuff but if I got a 50cc plane it wouldnt see 3D for a while. I plan on practicing with smaller stuff before trying it on a 50cc plane. But I would like to have a 50cc in possesion when I get ready to go for it, that way I can already be familiar with flying the plane. Also after looking at a lot of 50cc planes I have enough room in my vehicle. The Funtana is my first 3D plane and after only 2 times of flying it I was trying to hover about 25 feet in the air. I did pretty good thanks to all the sim time. The only thing was when your motor dies 25 foot off the ground its not fun. I was able to get a little speed and level it out but still it got my landing gear. Once again I dont plan on going out and throwing the gasser plane around I plan to be fairly decent at 3D before even trying. My main thing right now is just hovering, flat spins, and some high alpha flight but with altitude. After the other day even if I can hover safely 20-25 off the ground until I get used to tuning four strokes and have it running perfect I believe Ill get a little higher. I really have to be careful with the planes I have since I dont have the money to repair and replace them all the time. What do you guys think about buying a used 50cc plane.

Statements like that and the one earlier when you say you don't want a profile go against eachother. Speaking from experience, nothing will train you for larger 3D models like a profile. Profiles are cheap, which you want, they bounce rather than smash, and they fly like much larger (aka easier to 3d) than they are. You're kind of shooting yourself in the foot not trying one IMO. 40-size planes marketed as "3d" simply aren't. Sure they look good and fly sport aerobatics just fine. slow them down huck them around and they drop a wing or tear the gear out or break in half. I'm speaking from experience. It's cheaper and way faster to get a profile, then move up.

would this be a good combo with a MLD 28cc eninge with really good 3D performance or would it be a waste of money.

Don't forget... the larger the plane the more servos, batteries, linkage, everything costs.

If I wanted to get into 3D and learn all I could I would get a profile, OMP YAk, MOJO 60, TMP pro Katana. I would fly the snot out of it and while i was flying it I would purchase good 50 cc airframe and engine and build it while flying the profile.

Now if you like to build planes the 50cc That i would start with would be the OMP Hybrid Edge, It has a 92 span and fly's great with a 50cc engine, Mine came in at 16.75 pounds. That is foamy like weight compared to the wing area.

Here are a couple sites to look at, I would go with the 60 size birds and i know that the Mojo and the OMP are the best.

The saito 82 is a great engine for the 40 size airplanes
