I am currently building a Great Planes Giles-202 .45-.60 kit. I am going to put a O.S. 90 pumped four-stroke on it. How will this fly? Will it have enough power to torque-roll?

I'm just finishing mine up. I put Super Tiger 90 in it and had to mount the rudder servo in the tail with a pull-pull. What did you do on yours or have you gotten that far yet? I kept the landing gear at where recommended by GP, but reinforced the 1/8th inch lite ply vertical supports that landing gear plate glues on to. Looks like mine will come out around 5.75 pounds. Did you change anything?

I still have to build up the turtledeck, and the top in front of the canopy. Geese, a ST .90. That is going to have so much power, that you will probably be hovering at 1/3rd throttle or so. Some things I did different, I double beveled all of the surfaces to get more throw, and make it neater. I used 6 inch sheeting on the leading edge, and center sheeting. I hate guiling that many pieces together because of all the seams. I also will be mounting the servo in the tail, but with a solid pushrod. The one thing I didn't like about it was the interlocking of the fuse. When I would put one side on, the other would fall off. Then as recommended by GP, I used think Ca to wick it all together. it didn't stick very well, so I went over all of the pieces with baking soda and thin Ca to give it some strength. How long until you will have it flying.

Weather's been real bad out here and prevents me from paint the cowl. I got it primed, but waiting for a better weather. I can't move into my new house next month Actually, Super Tiger 90 won't be way too much power. I've talked to some that have same setup, vertical's good, not unbelievable or anything like that. If your using a .91 FS, you may want to consider moving the main gear forward a 1/2 ", the plane tends to lean forward quickly when you get on the power, there is not a lot of prop clearance to begin with.

I've been flying mine for about 2 years now using a ST .90 and MA 14x6 prop. As my flying site is over 4000 Ft over sea level this combo hardly hover the plane.

This is an excellent free style aerobatic airplane and it is wild in maneuvers like snaps and spins but i don't recomend using too much travel on elevator, in fact it is dificult to fly this airplane at the recomended high rates without using expos.

Just begin with the recomended throws in the elevator and move your CG back to the recomended point and you will find out why so little movement is needed. Two friends didn't follow the recomended throws and their airplanes have passed away.

After a while, i increased low rates to be an intermediate low/high and used about 35 degrees on high rates and 90% expo for hover and flat spins.

I didn't move or reinforced the landing gear support because i fly on asphalted runway and in fact no problems encountered 'till today.

Wow, how much was the final weight? There is an amendment to the booklet, that shows the new rates which are lower than the ones in the instruction booklet. What I had planned to do was have a lot of throw and a lot of expo, so I would have it available.

I love my giles. Mine's got a 91 FS in it, 15x6 prop. I would recommend larger tires, i didnt move my gear at all. Mid range balance from the plans seemed tail heavy to me, but it was very manageable. My rudder servo is in the tail. This plane is great to fly, ive never seen something do such great inverted flat spins. Mine is very docile, and crawls in. I didnt add any weight either, justed moved my battery pack up to the servo tray. Good luck, you'll love it

With the rates- make sure to put expo in, i thought the elevator was a touch too much, and the ailerons were too little for the default, but its up to personal preferance.

I have one with a Magnum .91 FS and switched from a 14x6 to a simitar 13x8 and what a difference!!! It holds hover much better. A little quick on the landing but worth it. The engine has only 4 flights on it. Also I recommend moving the gear forward. Nose overs are common on rough grass with the recommended position.

This is one of my favorites...I just re-did the canopy and cowl on mine for the new flying season.

It has a ST .90 in it (I started with an OS .60 FP) and is a great flyer - wild when you want it to be and mild when you slow it down. Flat spins are great and it recovers by itself as soon as you let go of the sticks. Stick with the recommended throws but you'll need high rates to get it into a spin. It flies through the spins on low.

There is a weak spot in the fuse structure, right at the LE of the wing - the fuse is only 2 inches high at that point, and I found mine cracked and ready to break in two in the off-season inspection. I would add some tri-stock there to lock the side, top, and former together.

The recommended rudder servo config on the bottom is stupid - I mounted it on the side of the fuse with a straight pushrod and ball link.

I really think it could use more vertical thrust, even with the .90. I don't know how anyone could fly it with the .46. It balanced fine with the batt under the turtledeck.

I own a Giles 202 45-60 also. I am thinking about a YS91. I am 12 yrs old so money will be a serios issue but flying it I think I am on the good side. Good Idea????

The weight is the biggest thing to watch out for - I don't know what the YS weighs.

The YS weighs 26.6 oz. i had to position my 5cell 1100mah flight battery about 6 inches ahead of the rudder post to achieve recomened CG. final weight on the plane with a two additional fuel tanks for smoke system came out at 7lb 3oz. Mine flys great! I am running the new FZ version of the .91 and am turnning a apc 16X6 @ 8900rpm, i did move the gear forward around 3/4 of an inch I also ballanced all the control surfaces and made the cowl myself from carbon/fiber glass mix.

This is my second kit built plane and i have been flying for about 18 months now and i love this stuff!
