Wow Mike, the good old days , 72 mhz, elect Funtana and at the old outlaw field to boot.

What is 3D flying?
3D Freestyle makes aerobatic flying interesting for the pilot and entertaining for the onlookers!

I flew pattern/aerobatic planes with screaming two stroke engines pothering smoke and castor oil from there tuned piped exhausts in my youth.
When I returned to RC flying in my retirement years everything had change; near silence due to electric power, no aerials on transmitters, computers in TX's. Aerobatics maneuvers were the same, but more precise, perhaps more formal but most of all I was not as sharp. So F3A as I learned this new era was called was not for me. A chap gave me a very ugly slab sided electric plane, that I was told was a 3D plane and I was hooked. Trying to do 3D maneuvers is just a lot of fun! I'm not on the same page as Sensei as can be seen from my attempts here... I was inspired by seeing Daniel P Holman. |
Nice! enjoyed reading, I was also mistakes about 3D glying

Now you did it! You sent me down the proverbial rabbit hole and look what I found! A veritable treasure trove from the OG's of 3D. I used to live for the Cirkus and DOD vids!

A few of Joe's airplanes came out of my shop. Namely his 3W Yak, Coca Cola themed Edge 540, Krill Katana, Aeroworks 35% Edge 540 and Colombo Pitts. |

I was there on Saturday.... actually... I just got my 14MZ and programmed it that morning.... (I was using a 9ZAP, and the programming was way easier!!) The White and Purple Funtana 140 in my video above was the plane I took to this event... Fun times right there... Back when 3D was the New Counter-Culture!! lol Tony did many-a-bad arse Cirkus video!!

3D flying as contrasted with Pattern and IMAC:
IMAC/Pattern, a mistake cost a point. 3D, a mistake cost a plane! ;)

love that definition :p
My turn now: 3D flying is the mastery of using the motor's torque and thrust vs the lifting capabilities of any part of the aircraft parts vs synergy to perform figures, or a sequence of, pre- or post-stall, that usually can't be performed by full scale aircraft due to pilot/power/airframe/safety limitations... Biggest help in learning 3D: my sim (Aerofly) and all the fantastic tuition videos, thanks to the authors! and +1 on the comments made by ahicks and sensei  |
Every weekend down here at the Beaumont club, haven't had a chance to get up to the Hesperia field in awhile. Still have a 50cc Yak and TRY to do 3D .He He.

My latest 3/D creation, at 1.8Kw on 8S it's 60% lighter then my GIANT 12S/6Kw EXTRA. Great fun to fly.

3D "flying" is overpowering an aircraft to the point where it really doesn't even need to fly, i.e. generate lift. Ostensibly this is so one can back a plane down to where it's tail touches the ground and then drive it back up. Based on the answer above 4D is doing the same thing but nose down with a reverse thrust prop until the spinner touches the ground. Sane people would ask "what's the point?" Some people also play Russian roulette - sane people also ask "why?" about that. But then...
