Minimum Power to Weight?

Never flown a 3D plane before, and I know you need greater than 1:1 ratio, but what would you guys say is the minimum ratio for doing any kind of vertical?

RE: Minimum Power to Weight?

At least 1.5 to 1, ideally up to 2 to 1 or more.

RE: Minimum Power to Weight?

what are you classifying as power ? what units ?

maybe thrust to weight ? ie 1.5:1 would give you a decent pull out from a hover ?

but how do you measure thrust of an engine/prop combination without building a proper thrust rig.

Maybe a better answer is enough thrust to pull out of a hover with plenty of authority, this will also be enough for other 3D stuff like waterfalls.

RE: Minimum Power to Weight?

all my planes hover 1 to 1 between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle. which leaves lots of explosive power in reserve to pull out when necessary. I am scared like hell when I fly someone elses airplane that hovers at 3/4+ throttle setting. hopes this helps, be careful not to add unecessary weight with a bigger engine - see my thread (increase power and decrease weight) on this list. good luck, hope this helps. ray
