U-Can-Do 3D 46 Engine Question
 

Getting this plane pretty soon. A guy recommended a Evolution .61 motor for it. He said it will pull out better during hovering. The motor is only $119 so I might get that, but only if it's a good setup for this plane. Is there any other engines that will pull out during hovering at the price around $100?? Or what type of engine are you guys running for your UCD46?

Saito 1.00 Save you money casue it's worth it. Everything else is just a waste of time. A 2 stroke doesn't do this plane justice.

I strongly disagree!
We have a guy at our field that flew a Ucan 40 with TT .61 ($100, I have it too, runs awesome!) and one with a saito 91 or 100 (Not sure)
The saito had abit better acceleration out a hover, but I think it's not worth the price...

I ain't payin no $280 for a peice of metal.

anway, I went out and looked at the Evolution .61 motor and it looks very nice with blue anodized parts. $119 for the motor. I'm gonna get it. My LHS said a friend of his is currently flying one and is using the evolution .61 motor and it pulls out during hover good.

Also, what prop size is recommended with this setup?

well you asked for the good setup? two stroke don't go with 3d. but i would say to get were a two stroke makes power a apc 12.25/3.75 if it will turn 14,500+ with it satio 100 16/4 10,000 much different in it.

i really don't think you will like the plane with a two stroke. it was made for a four stroke .


also a satio or ys is much more than a peice of metal. much more indead.

everyone mentioned you need a 4 stroke, no one said why...

better braking, swings a larger prop (more stable), better power at lower rpm and better transition, anyone else think of any others?

webra 50gt is the perfect motor for this plane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 STROKES FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!! on a dirtbike or in a plane a two stroke kicks you know what!!!!! Hey just my 2 cents

IMHO, I would go with the Saito 91. The money is worth it if you can afford it. For the weight/hp ratio, you can't argue. I used to run a OS50sx swinging a 12x4 zinger prop on it and it flew but no hover or vertical climb. Yea a two stroke has turn up speed, but a 4 stroke has the horse power to swing a big prop critical for 3D. I'm using an APC 15x4W prop. I can take off and roll about 10 feet and pull back and go straight vertical. Awsome power for the plane. The only time you want to throw the gas to this motor is ONLY in vertical climb. DON'T do it in horizontal or decline flight!

I love the Saito .91 in mine, and I've never been one to say something has too much power, but I could go vert all day and never use over 1/2 throttle. Most of the time I'm just a few clicks above idle. I'm gonna do an experiment next time I get out to the field. I'm gonna pull it into a hover, then count the clicks above idle I am. When I get back on the ground, I'm gonna tach the engine at that throttle level and see what RPM it takes to hover it.

I had a ys .63 in mine and it didn't have what was needed. I then went to a Saito 100 with a 15x4 prop and 20/20 fuel. Now the plane is fun to fly and has the power this plane needs.

I have one with a Saito 72 with a APC 15x4w prop running 30% heli fuel. More than enough power and the weight savings help a lot with flight performance. Great plane to help with your 3D practice.

Im gonna have to aggree. They swing the larger props needed for 3d.
The instance that i can think of using a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke is in racing airplanes, they have the higher rpm for those greater speeds while the 4 strokes got the tourqe.

I have a UCD 46 with a OS 50 and a APC 12x4 prop, and this thing rocks. the Evo 61 should be a very good choice. You live in Austin, and I`m down the road in San Antonio, if you want to fly before you buy, I will let you fly mine. This will allow you to make a educated decision.

A good friend of mine runs a YS .63 on his UCD.46. He has had nothing but great performance with this set-up. The YS is a bit pricey but worth it. I bought the exact set-up for myself a few days ago and cant wait for it to get to my door step so i can get it put together and in the air!

I had to agree on the 4-Strokes. I have a Saito72 on mine with a 14x4w APC. That Evolution engine may be cheaper than a Saito, and I have heard its a good engine and a great price. But the price your going to pay is the weight of the engine, 26oz -- around 10oz heavier than the Saito. This is definetly a plane you want to keep light. If a Saito is out of your price range, check out some of the other 4-Strokes, Magnum and TT make nice ones at decent prices.

BTW, the Evolution .61 was on my list of engine choices for this plane.
