RE: Full scale hovering
I found this off a website:
Vedeneyev M14R: 450-HP Rationale and Performance The M14 series of engines is one of the world’s most widely used and proven aircraft engines, and is probably the most successful aerobatic engine of all time. Its use in aerobatics has been with various versions, but principally the M14P at 360-hp, and then more recently the ‘PF’ with 400-hp. It became clear to us that there was a significant potential demand for an engine that could bring a light Su-26 or Su-31 into the category of more power than weight. Obviously with an M14PF engine and a 2.6m propeller we realised that if the aeroplane is light, the power to weight ratio is almost one to one. We felt that if we could get a significant jump over the ‘PF’, we could then bring about a totally new world of aerobatics, where the aeroplanes actually had more power than weight. With this in mind we have now been working for two years with Vedeneyev, funding the development of the M14R engine, in which our goal has been over 450-hp. The first customer engine in a Su-26M2 serial number 01-04 based in the UK. This aircraft is used by one of the best European Air Show performers, and is performing extremely well, and clearly giving every bit of its claimed power. At sea level it is giving 1160mm of mercury of supercharger boost – equal to almost 46" of boost. In conjunction with the wide chord propeller (see below) the aircraft has a power to weight ratio comfortably in excess of 1:1. Rate of climb is in excess of 5,000ft/min. 450 HP in a Sukhoi should do it eh ;) |
RE: Full scale hovering
could well be, might explaine how he climed out of that prophang, all be it with the smoke off
|
RE: Full scale hovering
ORIGINAL: Kule Kanain Nice video - looks like Ian Groom and he IS NOT hovering... |
RE: Full scale hovering
I know it's been a while since you posted that and you are, in fact, correct about all that info. There is one thing that is not correct though. Wayne Handleys' turbo ravens' variable pitch control never malfuntioned. He just made a bad mistake. According to the NTSB investigation reports, there was nothing wrong with the prop pitch control or the plane. Just thought you'd find that interesting.

RE: Full scale hovering
The Turbo Raven was a Giles G-700, built by Giles aircraft and yes, it could hover and accelerate vertically. I saw it happen at Reno with a density altitude of 7,500'.[X(]
|
RE: Full scale hovering
What N726AC is saying is correct. I saw Wayne hang it on the prop for about five seconds, then accelerate vertically. I witnessed it at the Miramar Airshow maybee 5 years ago..(obviously)

RE: Full scale hovering
Daryld12 don't believe everything that you read. . .
For the others, here is Leo's Shark, some info, pics, and video: http://www.zivko.com/EDGE/news/leo.html |
RE: Full scale hovering
Isnt there a guy that goes into a hover high up and let it tail slide 100mph down??????
|
RE: Full scale hovering
would have thought it'd flip round way before that.. tho on the way down the elevator seems to be reversed,, might be able to control it for a while.
|
RE: Full scale hovering
Yeah, all surfaces reverse shortly after the slide accelerates backwards. . . takes some learning to do it, that's for sure.
Here is some good footage of how it looks: http://www.airviolence.com/request.php?129 |
RE: Full scale hovering
i found it in FMS, was quite fun to fly a plane backwards :)
|
RE: Full scale hovering
Wow - looks like I'll be bringing a thread back from the dead :) !
I was looking for info on the Turbo Raven after I found out about another new airplane out there which hopes to hover and maybe outdo the Turbo Raven. Check this out: www.turbinetucan.com The Turbine Tucan has a turbine engine making 750 HP and about 3000 lb of thrust in a 1600 lb biplane [X(] !!! They've even already contracted with someone to make the R/C version :D ! I can't wait to see it fly! |
RE: Full scale hovering
Oh yeah, they say they're going to use it to break the biplane speed records and they also claim it'll be the first plane to hover ;) .
|
RE: Full scale hovering
Quique Somenzini has been contracted to duplicate the R/C version. His airplanes are top notch and he has already installed a Wren turbo prop in one of his Yak 54's. IIRC it was the 102" version. I believe he will use a Wren for the Toucan also.

RE: Full scale hovering
My father is the director of maintenance and the general manager of the Fargo Jet Center, he has unbelievable knowledge on aircraft. He also happens to personally know Wayne Handley, the pilot of the Turbo Raven. Well, my dad told me that the Raven is the closest your gonna get to a hover. The power to weight ratio is not even close to what is on our 3d R/C, as most of you know. Hope this helps

RE: Full scale hovering
Thats Kirby Chambliss in his Edge above.. [8D]
The late Jim Leroy was pretty good at holding his Pitts up there too @ 1:15 [8D] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1MBQ5t27Us |

RE: Full scale hovering
On utube names and headers often get renamed,so who really knows.I got the same clip but it was named something else,I thought it was Kirby, but you may be right on that one.
Once I watched it again ,it does seem like a different style than Kirbys.Good pilot for sure :D |
RE: Full scale hovering
U guys need to check out the "JUKA" JUrgis KAirys airplane.... 450 vedenejev engine it does hover, but he is not flying it right now at shows, he is working on a better engine for it.... and about Russian pilots being riskier..... a human life was very cheap back when they were doing test on the planes over there, so they are used to pushing the envelope without caring if someone dies.... in my opinion this is why we are using russian rocket technology now and samething with their jets...... they just don't care.....
|
RE: Full scale hovering
I've got quite a few videos of his too, definately pushed his Sukhoi hard :D
|
RE: Full scale hovering
Its a sukhoi with yak wings
|
RE: Full scale hovering
Really? is there any specs on this?
His Suk sure sems to fly a little diffrerent [8D] |
