RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
No prob :)
I was just dispelling a few myths about pattern flying. See you soon, Angus |

RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
3D is the big thing for now; it sure took a long time to catch on however.
I have a lot of video of me in the mid 80's hovering my Midwest Hots and Ugly Stik, touching the tail in the dirt, and what is called a harrier now I just called high-alpha and rolling high-alpha. Also did it with my Goldberg Cub as well with an OS 90FS. I used to get laughed at a lot back then (A LOT!), and was told how "stupid" it looked: Now it's the big thing: I'm beyond bored with it and enjoy pattern and general aerobatics more. The downside to 3D is that I've seen a measurable increae of mid-airs, and planes zipping in the pits from those that "think" they have it under control. |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
I doubt anyones here's seen one, but my dads old Cambrian Models Cessna trainer would hold itself in a hover if you gave it full power. Same with his overpowered Chris Foss Uno Wot(another trainer). Both of those provoked some strange looks from the assembled masses. :)

Sorry, I usually don't use the quote because it uses up space. The way I can tell what people are responding to is to look at the bottom right of the post. It show who you are responding to.
Sorry bout that[&o] |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
Look at all you pink tutu so called "men", with your so called "flash" radio gear. "Ooooooh look at me! I can do 3D! Ooooh spank me someone!!"
You want to know cool? Go freeflight When you join a bunch of tough, wind worn, hard faced, stern aeromodellers on a draughty airfield in the middle of no-mans land, and chuck your latest 300 hour scale job with more detail than anything rc can conjure up, into a 20 MPH wind with only rubber for power and prayer for guidance, that is cool. :) |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
ORIGINAL: Shahid with only rubber for power :) |

Favorite list:
1) IMAC 2) 3D I don't fly pattern so I wouldnt know how fun their competitions are. But IMAC has THE funnest competitions during the summer. 3D is just testing the limits of our planes, and pushing the limits of our skills, and everyone loves pushing their skills, I know I do!!! But w\ out IMAC or pattern, a pilot wouldnt be as capable of 3D in my opinion, cuz percision flying uses rudder inputs constantly and smoothly, which convertes 3D flight to smoother flying! |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
Cool is knowing what you’er doing when you're flying. Always having control of your plane, always flying safe.
I know pilots who can hoover, very low, and the other 3D figures but can not do a nice 4 point roll. I know pilots who fly F3A and 3D very good, but just can fly a glider around. And others who fly a glider with such smoothness, land on the spot and find the weakest thermals. That is also cool to me. 3D is spectacular, and that is what grabs people attention, not the glider pilot who is up high circling on thermals. But maybe it's harder to do for the glider pilot. There is more than 3D. Or a scale pilot who flies with great realism, this can also be beautiful. To me, the coolest maneuver is a perfect landing. How often do you see a 33% aerobatic plane flying great and screwing up the landing? Ok 4 or 5 bounces and nothing broken, you can call that a landing. We call it: Just stopping with flying. |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
You said it man, if someone can troque roll and do other 3D maneuvers but can't do the basic 4 point roll without getting out of wack or changing heading then its not that awesome to watch including when the plane is all over the place. Pattern flying is harder then 3D in my opinion, bc how many unlimited pilots in IMAC is there? Not as many as sportsman right? Then think about how many guys you see doing awesome torque rolls? A lot around where I live. It's hard for me to explain it but I hope it makes sense!!

RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
It all depends on what one thinks is more worth their while to practice. If you have a 3D plane your not going to practice 4 pointers as much as your going to practice torquing.
*edit. I did buy one of the 40 size arf katanas. Dude! this thing can fly a pretty good pattern, I was very suprised. Slow roll from horizon to horizon without much effort. I hope we find more dedicated 3D planes with a thin wing |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
I will admit 3D is cool and difficult to master (I haven't) however, nothing makes people take notice like screaming down wind at 160+ and then pulling a hard 75ft radius turn back up wind. Now that's cool... 1 perfect left turn isn't to hard but 30 perfect ones with 3 other guys trying to do the same thing in the same space.... Thats cool.
I guess I'm the first vote for pylon.... |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
I sometimes wish i could spend some time w\ other forms of this hobby (ex. pylon, sailplanes, warbirds), but right now IMAC and 3D is my addiction:D!!!

RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
Coolest manouver is undoubtedly a perfectly executed rolling circle. Takes way more skill than any 3D manouver and done 5ft off the deck is as, if not more impressive than any 3D manouver.
Angus (rolling circle addict) |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
stop injecting fuels into those veins, Angus, told you in was bad news, trying waning yourself off with straight fuel first though (halucintaing free flight models is bad, let alone doing it :D)

@diggs 74
I agree with you that pylon is very exciting. I only flew the electric Speed 400 class thus not so fast but o so nice. Racing about 2m high or lower, very close together that is adrenalin to me. I’m not a race-pilot but I fly a few contests a year for fun. It’s not so difficult to fly as pattern or 3D but for those who have never flew a pylon contest it’s just a few left turns. That is not true, it’s not easy to make the perfect turn. |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
Yet I find the rolling harrier (done accurately and smoothly) harder than a one roll circle. Do a rolling circle, with only 1 roll, two rolls, four rolls etc., same altitude, nice 360... Makes rolling harriers child's play. |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
i agree with ultimate. 1 roll circles are much easyer than a rolling harrier
|
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
So your one roll rolling circles have a constant roll rate, constant radius, perfectly wind corrected with no height deviation Edible? If that really is the case then congratulations, you are one hell of a good pilot.
Angus |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
no there not. but then again ive only flown 3 years so i doubt id be that good.
mabey i am one hell of a good pilot??? I dont know but i do know Im now good enough to be in a display team:D |
RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
Doing a rolling circle isn't that hard. Doing it perfectly is MEGA hard. Thats what im talking about (must be the pattern pilot in me coming through there :) )

RE: Is 3D the coolest form of the hobby
@ edible_engine:
I have a question for you, when you find it easy to do 1 roll in a circle, I would like to know what plane you're using for that. I find it very hard to do. (Not to say that it's more a lucky shot when it succeeds). |
