3D Performance
 

Hey guys,
I have an Ultra Stick Lite with a Super Tigre G2300 with a Bisson Pitts Exhaust. My poor MENZ sucked up a piece of sheet plastic and shattered (BIG PIECE). So before i really read up I blew $50 on a Mejzlik CF 18X6. Now that I've started reading alot of people are saying it won't yeild good 3D perf! I fly alot of sport, IMAC ish stuff but I also fly alot of 3D.. So will this Prop exhaust combo work OK? Or am I gonna have to turn right around ad sell this puppy?

Ice man wish i could help but i dont know much about larger scale aircraft(engines props etc etc)

Typically a 6 pitch prop is on the boarder of 3D or not. Some guys think its a bit too fast while others are comfortable with it. I cant speak for your muffler choice although I have read posts on others using a pitts with no issues reguarding 3D. Personally I am running a 18X6W on my plane and thats the recomended prop for 3D but the W ion it takes the speed away. Like I said the prop will work, after that its soley based on how you like it for that specififc aplication.

I'm using Zinger 17X5's on a Moki 1.35 with a Slimline Pitts muff. Get great transition, not too much speed in Great Planes U-Can-Do.
If I remember right, I think they go for about $12.

Hey James.. Thanks for the help but the ZINGER flatten when flying a larger plane and trying to do hovers and torq rolls and won't allow me to pull out... At let in my experience.

I would be interested in how you know the prop is "flattening"? Do you mean flexing or bending? I would think it would take a high speed camera to prove that or a good eye watching the prop while someone is holding the plane. What is the weight of the Ultra-light?
The ST 2300 should hover&pull out up to 9.5 lbs I would think. I have a Great Planes U-Can-Do .60 w/Moki 1.35 spinning 17X5 wood Zinger. The plane weighs 8.5 lbs, has awesome vertical and hovers all day(OK, in the hands of a better pilot than me anyway).I did have to put in OS 7D carb to get the Moki just right.

Yes on spool up you can definatly see a MA and A Wood prop " flatten" Almost looks as though you are taking the pitch out of the prop which leads to poor power and torque when you most need it. You have to be in line with it to see. Not good practice but if you are there you can see it change shape.

Yup you can see the prop flatten if you look really closely on the ground (don't try it to often) and another way you can tell is say When I had my APC I had awesome vertical and it would hover and pull out with alot of athority.. Now throw on the ZINGER it turns Higher pm's due to less weight still good vertical but suddenly you realize when you pull into a hove and you're having to hover at over 1/2 throttle where as the APC was at 3 clicks less thatn 1/2... Now Punch it... wait a few seconds, engines screaming, but the planes BARELY climbing out.. It's either flatening or a very inefficient prop.

Got my Mejzlik in yesterday.. will run her today but it's 20-30 mph winds here so no flying[:@]

Yea theres really no arguing with that its a fact and if you cannot see it you can definatly feel it when in flight.

Hey James..

You know those wood props you use? They don't yeild nearly the performance of the Carbon Fiber props... Or even the GOOD wood props such as MENZ.. Yeah sure the Zingers are good flor warbirds and just flting around but if you want great 3D performance you gotta pay.. I liked the MENZ great prop at $16 bucks.. Thats about the only wood prop I'll use for 3D again.. You may think your getting great performance on the ZINGER but spend a little cash and try out a different prop.. Also I don't know about you but I've never broken a prop due to dumb thumbs.. The only one I've broken was the menz that sucked up some plastic.. All the others (trainer) have been flown to the point of wearing out, cracking ect.

I liked the APC I had but it was HEAVY... The engine didn't like the APC when it came to the midrange.. I liked the MENZ It gave good all around performance but that particular pitch/ dia. combo didnt yeild great 3D performance.. Now I'm sure if it was an 8 pitch it would've been better. The Mejzlik is lighter than the APC and about the same or lighter than the MENZ.. It's thinner bladdes and more efficient airfoil will allow the engine to reveal it's true performance capabilities.

I've run the Zinger for a VERY brief time on the engine.. When on the ground you can sit there and watch the blades flatten.. Then when your flying circles it seems OK but you can tell its no Menz or Mejzlik.. Then when I went into a hover I was having to run a higher throttle setting causing the engine to heat up.. Then punch it to pull out and the engine revs to it's limit and the plane goes ever so slowly upwards..

Your right the zinger may perform great in the UCD but that's an insanely over powered plane with a 1.35 but if it were in a plane made for a 1.35 sized engine maybe you could see what I mean

Please tell us what RPM your G2300 swings the Mejzlik 18x6. My G2300 swings APC 18x6 @ 8500 rpm and pulls a 12.5-lb. plane out of vertical slowly. I wanted to get a Menz 18x6 @ the Toledo show, but no one has it at the show by Saturday afternoon.

I MEANT NO SARCASM TO ANYONE,JUST GENUINELY UPSET IF I HAD TO SPEND $50/PROP.(HEY, WE ALL HAVE TO LIVE WITHIN OUR BUDGET) I WILL LOOK AT THE (WOOD) MENZ&MEJ-WATCH-YOU-CALL-IT, THAT PRICE IS ABOUT THE SAME AS APC. I'M NOT HAVING ANY PULL-OUT PROBLEMS DUE TO LARGE ENGINE SIZES SO THE PROP BRAND DOESNT SEEM TO BE AN ISSUE FOR ME.
ALTHOUGH IF I'M WASTING THRUST/PERFORMANCE THATS NEVER A GOOD THING. I USE APC'S TOO BUT YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE WEIGHT, HUGE DIFFERENCE FROM WOOD. ON A SIDE NOTE, ANOTHER REASON FOR OVER-SIZING ENGINES- IN THE WINTER, ALL ENGINES PERFORM MUCH BETTER, THEN SUMMER COMES AND SUDDENLY YOU CAN NO LONGER PULL OUT OR SUSTAIN HOVER. IF YOU CAN HOVER AT 1/3-1/2 THROTTLE IN WINTER, I GUESS YOU SHOULD BE OK IN SUMMER. I THINK THIS IS MOST APPARENT WITH GLOW ENGINES.

I HAD A 12LB+ SU26 THAT ORIGINALLY HAD WEBRE 1.20 IN IT,WOULD NOT PULL OUT OF HOVER, WENT TO OS1.60 AND WOW!!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE. THAT ENGINE WOULD SWING 18x6 @ MID-HIGH 9K RPM. I THINK AN 18X6 FOR THE 2300 MIGHT BE A LITTLE TOO MUCH PROP, HAVE YOU TRIED 17X6 OR 17X8?

The Menz wood is definatly the way to go as far as wood props it's a good one.. THe 18X6 seems fine for the 2300 as long as it's in the 8's or preferably 9's it's fine;)

WHAT KIND OF WOOD IS THE MENZ? I THINK MOST WOOD PROPS ARE MAPLE. ARE THE MENZ SHAPED LIKE A PATTERN PROP OR WIDE TIPS?

You can get the MENZ S which is a 3D prop or the menz ULTRA which is a very narrow blade similar to the Mejzlik

The menz wood is German Beachwood. Get em through Desertaircraft.com. $16 bones. have fun.
