Wild Stick 40

I couldnt find a dedicated thread for this airplane so I thought I would start one. I just ordered it and should recieve it next week. I plan using the following configuration:

OS 70
4 JR 537's on Ail/Flps
HT 645's on elev/rud

I would really like to hear from anyone flying this plane. My last 40 size was a funtana 40. I will post about how it builds and flies. I am anticipating a solid aerobatic and 3D aircraft thats easy to transport.

Hi Budget...

I have just completed one...
OS 46ax
Futaba 3004s and one 3010 on the Ruder

Came out extreamly nose heavy...
Moter and battery as far to the rear as they can be...
4 1/4 oz of weight on the tail....

ALSO CAREFUL as the rudder servo hits on the
elevator push rods...

spaced my Rudder servo off the fuse. with wheel colars..
Has a 320cc fuel tank????
I have a MODEL TECH 90 Fun Fly with that size tank...

Must say that the quality of the plane is the BEST I have ever
seen...

HOPE TO HAVE THE FIRST FLIGHT THIS WEEK

Walt...

RE: Wild Stick 40

It sounds like I will be making a few changes when I build it. Are the servos in the tail up front? Also do you think there is clearance for a 13-14 inch prop?

Walt and Sage 05-04-2005 09:47 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

I have a 12x4 on mine and it has 2 1/2 inch clearance from the ground..

The rudder servo is under the REAR of the fus and the elevator
in in the provided servo tray under the wing...

This plane is very different than most 3D type...
The wing cord is quite THIN...

This plane is either going to fly GREAT or very BAD...
Hope it flys as good as it looks...:)

HMMMMMM,
I just checked mine with an OS 46 AX,and it balances in the center of the range (41/4" behind the LE).
I did put my battery pack in the unused cutout in the servo tray.
All I like is the 4 wing pushrods,and some XP8103 programming,and she's ready.
I have no complaints on anything yet.
In fact, I have this one on backorder.

I sure DO NOT understand the weight difference in the two planes..
I used a CG MACHINE to balance mine so I am SURE it
needed the weight....

I get my Wild Stick Monday. I hope that it is as good as it is supposed to be. This is going to replace a Super Air that I dumped nose first last Sunday. Was my first crash. At least it was a good one with lots of debris!
Any building tricks that you guys could give me before I start the build. I am going to put an OS 50 in it so it should have ample power.

Thanks
Graham

RE: Wild Stick 40

There's nothing to this one.
You will need 3- 12" servo extensions,and 7 servos.
You really need a computer radio to get your money's worth.
I didn't have any problems with the rudder linkages interfearing with the elevator pushrods either.
It's a simple glue together, and hook up controls type ship.
It is very well made, and easy to put together.

I also put together a Wild Stick. The plane is very nice. The metric bolt packs suck. Some of the small parts were gone. I'm running an older O.S. 50 FSR. Haven't balance or flown yet. I'm pretty sure the battery will have to go way in back. Over all it's a very nice and very light plane. It should fly great.

RE: Wild Stick 40

WALT, just curious if you have flown yours yet, I will not have mine built until this weekend. I am worried about yours coming out that nose heavy because I wanted to put OS 70 in mine.

RE: Wild Stick 40

Hi Budget,

Yes, I have 8 flights on mine...
Still trying different props and set ups. Was surprised that i could
hover it and control the wings. I thought the flaps would make it very hard to
steady the wings...

Have not been able to flat spin it yet.. May need MORE tail weight !!!! [:o]
Seems to fly at high speeds better than slow.. very smooth..
I think it is the weight and the small wing cord...

It is more an aerobatic type than a 3D type aircraft...

GOOD LUCK...;) Walt....

Well I just opened my kit and it looks very nice. Nice big surfaces. I will have it built for this weekend.

RE: Wild Stick 40

I finally flew mine yesterday evening.
I only had time for a 10 minute trim/break the jitters flight.
With the 46AX,and APC 12.25X3.75 it's still pretty fast.
Did a few loops,and rolls,and landed.
All in all,I'm happy with it. I have a little trimming, and some programming tweaking to do yet.
This was my first flight in about 3 years, and it was no problem to put it where I wanted it.
I was flying mostly @ 1/3 throttle as I was worried about those giant control surfaces fluttering.
I'll update after a few more flights.

RE: Wild Stick 40

Hey walt, you said you were surprised at how much aileron control had even with the flaps while hovering. This is leading me to believe you dont have it set up for flaperons. You would get even more control with this set up.

RE: Wild Stick 40

Anyone set their wild stick using a futaba 7c or maybe a 9c? I am using a 7chp and am trying to get this thing programed like the way it tells you on futaba's website in the "faq" section using the 7 servo setup as an example. I I can't get the damn thing to work the way I want it to! I am new at programing mixing. Tonight i spent 2 hours messing with it and have got nowhere.

Can someone give me some advice?

thanks
Graham

Hi Budget,

On my transmitter, with two servos for flaps only and two for ailerons only
you can not set up flaperons like you can with ONE large strip aileron...
The FLAP servos BOTH go in one direction up or down,,,,

ALSO if anyone is building one please note:

THE DECALS TURN MILKY AFTER YOU INSTALL THEM..[:-]
I have been told that after a day or so they CLEAR UP..

RE: Wild Stick 40

How are the landings? Does it float in or drop in?

cyclist364 05-19-2005 07:33 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

I had one for a few weeks and it was a very nice plane i could get it to do real good Inverted flat spins and it would hover real well BUT I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT THEY DO A TERRIBLE JOB OF PUTTING THIS PLANE TOGETHER I HAD THE LANDING GEAR BLOCK COME OFF DURING FLIGHT AND THE COVERING KEPT IT ATTACHED TO THE PLANE AND THE GEAR WERE ON TOP OF THE WING IT WAS VERY HARD TO LAND THIS WAY IT WANTED TO ROLL TO THE RIGHT . SO I FIXED THAT WITH SOME EPOXY WHICH IT SEEMED THEY FORGOT TO PUT INTO IT
SO I TOOK IT OUT AGAIN LAST NIGHT NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THERE WAS NO GLUE AT THAT JOINT MAYBE I SHOULD CHECK THE FIREWALL SO ON MY LAST FLIGHT I WAS ABOUT 300 TO 400 FEET UP AND MY SAITO POPPED OFF THE FRONT OF THE PLANE WHEN I FOUND THE ENGINE IT HAD PULLED THE FIRE WALL OFF THE PLANE AND THE PLANE FLUTTERED TO THE GROUND AND THE WING WAS DEMOLISHED SO IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE PLANES GLUE IT UP
BESIDES THAT AND THE TRIM NOT STICKING AND PEELING OFF EVERYWHERE IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD FLYING PLANE ELEVATORS SUCK THO PLANE WILL PORPOISE

marzo91 05-19-2005 07:41 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

How big is your Saito? Did it break loose from vibration, or was there no glue on the firewall too?

cyclist364 05-19-2005 11:05 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

No glue there either it is a .72 saito

cyclist364 05-19-2005 11:07 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

Well not to say there was no glue
just very little
and the glue used was not epoxy
and the bottom of the fire wall had no glue what so ever

Wow, I cant believe we are talking about the same airplane. I just started building and I came on to post how awesome this kit came out the box. I will double check the rest of the plane before I continue. I was going to hang my OS70 on this thing but maybe I will throw my 50 on it.

Walt and Sage 05-20-2005 09:25 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

.

I am going to re check my W/S but I have noticed none of
the problems that 364 reported...

Mine seems to be VERY solid, so much so it is heavy for it`s
size...

Mike 1 05-21-2005 08:12 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

I've put 7 more flights on mine yesterday evening, and this morning.
I must say it will do a lot more than I can.
Finally had no wind conditions, and played with some of the mixing, and I love it.
It will loop so tight, almost catching its tail[X(]
With flap/alieron mix on it is almost a blur in roll.
In crow it will slow to a walk on landing.
I've also had it going pretty fast now,and can report no flutter yet.
Also I must apologize to Walt,I did add 2 oz. of lead to the tail.
The OS 46 AX is comming alive now,I've tried an 11X4,and 12.25X3.75 APC and think I like the 11X4 best so far.
Like I stated erlier,I just back after 3 years off,and I can highly reccomend this one for anyone in the same situation.
As far as the construction problems posted erlier,I haven't noticed it in mine.
Mike

RE: Wild Stick 40

I flew 6 or 7 tanks through mine yesterday too. Construction on mine was perfect. OS 50FSR, Jr servos, 600 pack, and full length ailerons. AUW 4 lbs 9 ozs. Full deflection rudder and high speed barely holds level knife edge. Even with the huge rudder, it doesn't respond great in hover or torque roll. I'm right on the balance point now, it may get better as I go to tail heavy. Still need a push for level inverted, quite a bit of wing rock in harrior.
But it still flies great! Slows to a walk without flaps, lands easier and slower than any trainer I've seen, slows well on downlines, and gives alot of confidence for low altitude aerobatics.
I've already decided if I wreck this, another will be on it's way.

RE: Wild Stick 40

Marzo are you at the front of the cg limit?

marzo91 05-21-2005 09:58 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

Yes, I'm at the front c.g. Now I'll have to add lead to the tail to move the c.g. back. I've built a balsa compartment near the tail for the battery pack. I suppose a couple ounces won't hurt. I really like this plane.

budgetdude 05-21-2005 10:34 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

It looks like I will have mine done next weekend. This nose heavy thing is bugging me alot. I am going to end up putting in my 50 and also move the elevator servo to the tail.

budgetdude 05-21-2005 10:36 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

One thing I think contributes to the nose heavy issue is the heavy gear. I found that my ols pizazz gear with wheels is ligher, so I put those instead.

budgetdude 05-25-2005 06:26 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

:D Ok guys I flew my WS40 yesterday. I did put my OS 70 on it. I am running the wing with 4 servos but all are set to act as big ailerons. I am running max throw with 40% expo, and it balanced on the spar with 2.5 ounces of weight in the tail. This thing flew frigging awesome. I think it flew better than my funtana. It spins, tumbles, and flips very well. It also tracked very straight and I was able to do some nice basic pattern moves. On low rates I think this be fine second or third plane that could expand into a 3D'er. It landed nice with the power off and woul;d settle in tail first. This was essential because my 14 inch prop had 1 inch of ground clearance. Like most arfs it couple coupled horribly, I was able to get a full roll using the rudder. I mixed all out with my 8103 and now I can do a control line pattern. So far when I parachute it snaps off to the left. With the 70 it loops really big. I will keep cheeking the glue joints but so far its holding up. I got pretty fast coming out of some dives but didnt get any flutter. The only hard part of building it was the dual elevator pushrod, but I suck at bending those anyway.

budgetdude 05-27-2005 05:56 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

I just weighed my WS and with the OS70 and 2 extra servos it weighs 5 pounds 4.5 ounces. I am going to replace the wing blind nuts with dubro brass inserts and 10-32 bolts.

marzo91 05-27-2005 09:51 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

I have a 50 FSR in mine. I put the battery and the receiver in a compartment towards the tail. Added no lead. I glued the flap and aileron together on each side. So I have two servos in the wing instead of four. I swiss cheesed the landing gear. AUW is 4 lbs. 10 ozs. Unlimited vertical, hovers a bit over half throttle, but is a challenge to hover. I'm now at the back CG, I may have to go further back yet.
For the size, the rudder isn't nearly as effective as you would think. Full throttle, full rudder, sustained knife edge isn't possible.
All in all, it's a real nice plane. Not a 3d hot rod, but a nice aerobatic plane.

budgetdude 05-28-2005 01:34 PM

RE: Wild Stick 40

I agree about the rudder, it is so limited by the elevators. There are a couple of things that are poorly designed. It should of included solid ailerons also in case you didnt want to mix. Mine will hold level knifeedge but wont climb.

budgetdude 06-05-2005 02:20 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

Well mine flies great, any one curious about how its going go ahesd and post.

Walt and Sage 06-05-2005 11:05 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

After 30 flights, i feel the plane is POORLY DESIGNED but has the BEST quality
of (ARF) workmanship I have ever seen...

I now would never recommend this plane as a 3D plane...
It is hard to figure out just what this plane is....;)

I will keep flying it and twikeing it, it is fun and a challenge...

budgetdude 06-07-2005 02:10 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

Well due to some weird and unfortunate events I get test out CGP warrantee service. All I will say for know is glass the wing joint and tristock the vertical stab. Ill keep you posted.

Walt and Sage 06-07-2005 09:19 AM

RE: Wild Stick 40

Hi Budget,!!!!
NOTHING would surprise be about that plane...

My OS 46ax will NOT even run right on it...
And thats hard to screw up...
