Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
1 Attachment(s)
Electric Fanatics:
I am in the process of building and converting Hangar 9 Extra 260. This forum was started to share ideas among fellow electric fanatics and to inform would be future electics fans. I will skip ARF assembly to Glow Threads and focus on Electric Hardware install and flying (later) I chose this airfame for two reasons. 1. long hatch for easy battery access. 2. successfully flying funtana 90 conversion. 3. lured into it by advertized weight of 11.5lb on low side Hmmm that is 3 reasons. The airframe is built with servos installed ( pull-pull ) with no mount yet. It is about 8lb. It has 4 Hitec 5625MG and 1 5955TG servos I am going with Axi 5330/18 with 9s setup and Jeti advance 90amp controller. Because I'll be flying 9S pack instead of 10s for ease of parallel charging and pack use in multiple planes ( H9 Super Cub, Funtana 90, Pacific Aero Edge 540/90. GP Little Toni, GP UCanDo 30 60 ). My expected power input is about 3500W for a flying weight of 14lb for 9S4p and 13lb for 9s3p. Initial motor test will be performed with 22x12E prop and adjust according to Whatt meter to have a full throttle amps of 95-100. I will be going with Espritmodel's Aluminum mount for the motor attachment. Here is the pic of little brother to Axi 5330/18 which is 5320/28 in Funtana 90 with 9s2p 15c 2000mah cells with 19x8e prop. |

Pictures of home charging (make sure your eyes are on the display at all times if you plan to charge inside) and field box.
2 packs shown will be powering the Extra 260. These packs are currently being used on my Funtana 90. Having 3 packs allows me to fly every 20min at the field. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
lol, you should move it to the 3D electric forum then :D.
But on the serious note, a couple things you need to do 1. Reinforce the landing gear with Kevlar (see the other thread) or get the Graphtech instead 2. tighten all your screws on the linkages. 3. make sure you use 1.25- 1.5" servo arms for the elevator for max throw I think electrics are cool. I just don't have the money for it at this point.:) |

BoneDoc:
Thanks for the info. I was happy that I did not have to by another Graphtech for this model due to prop clearance but I guess I still have to... I was praising good hardware ( cf tail gear, cf main gear ) but I'll have to retract. All machined screws are locktited. Hmmm I forgot the wheel collars.... Gotta do that too. Yes the price goes up exponentially as size increases. But at 90 size ( funtana 90), it is quite doable. In my funtana, Motor + ESC: $388 Kokam 9S2P 15c 2000mah cells: $420 Total $808 for 4-600 10min flights If you do YS YS110: $360 Fuel (10 flights/gal @$20/gal): $800 Total $1160 for 400 flights It would be very expensive to buy these batteries but I am reusing what I already have for Funtana 90. So, excluding the battery, motor+esc cost me $500 or cost of a cheap 50cc with muffler. I am flying the heavier GP PW Extra 300 with a DA50 engine which cost me $650 with the slimline muffler. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
This sounds pretty cool. I wish I had the money.

RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Hey red_z06... what kind of charge sheet is that on your batteries? I'm curious as to the data you put on there. It might be beneficial to some of us. ;)

RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Ghee:
It is just a chage log with 480 boxes of 30 columns x 16 rows. It also shows initial charge date. I'll be happy if the battery packs last until the last box is marked and if the capacity is good enough after that... well that is freebee. 1st pack has 90 charges 2nd 65 3rd 34 <- since April 2005 3 packs are chaged as shown at home ( in my driveway ) then they are field charged with 80ah car battery in a custom box with banana terminals. While it is being depleted, 1000w generator replenishes with its 12v outlet and another 12v 24a radioshack power supply plugged into 110v outlet for additional 2 astro 109 chargers. This allows me to continuously charge 2 packs while I'm flying the 3rd. After flying the 3rd home charged pack, there is a bit of delay 10-15min before I can fly the 4th flight ( 1st field charged ) I really need 4th pack to fly nonstop. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Cool!!! by the way....that some MAJOR battery power you got there! [sm=thumbup.gif]

RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Well,
My cost is this Moki 2.1 200 dollars used, with muffler already 5% fuel 8 dollars Not to mention if you CRASH!!!, that's a whole lot money in puffed up Lipo. I already totaled my Sig 3D mayhem due to no radio control at all (not dumb thumb). |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
BoneDoc:
The comparison was only for a 90 sized bird. There is absolultely no way you can compare 50cc class gas to electric in cost. BTW, I used OS BGX1 2.2 in my fisrt PW extra 300 and I used 2cases of wildcat 15% in one month with the cost of $120. I immidiatly swithed to DA50 and gas for the power and fuel cost reasons. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
If my LHS didn't sell fuel so cheap, I probably would have been on the DA bandwagon too :D.
Don't get me wrong, I "grew up" on electrics, and if money were no object, I'd do that instead. |

Another piece of hardware....
Jeti advance 90 ESC mounted with some cooling holes drilled. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
I don't have anything against electrics, but the DA50 looks better.:D
How much did you pay for the entire power system?(batteries, speed control, motor) |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Axi 5330/18 $250
Jeti advance 90 $250 Batt Packs $0 (from Funtana 90) They would be $480 each new x 2 |

[X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(]
WWWWOOOOOOWWWWW $1460.00 in a power system. If you have the money then spend it. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Like I said, not for 1st attempt at electric conversion.
For those who are interested, Funtana 40 would be a good place to start. Motor + ESC would run you $250 and the batt pack would run you another $200 which is like buying 10 gal of 20% fuel up front. Just remember, as size goes up, the cost increases exponentially. |

After running to a local hardware store for a contour gauge...
3 1/8" CF spinner is from EspritModel. Their FG spinner is dirt cheap (relatively speaking). I think I should have gotten 3.5" CF Spinner. I just need to mount UBEC, 2 Batt Packs according to CG and build batt boxes, build 2 series Ultra Dean wire sets, and mount receiver switch and it will be ready for maiden. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
For more efficient heat removal from the motor, I will have to build louvers to redirect inlet airflow from the cowl.

RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
you forgot to mention the $390 for 3 astroflight 109s and the pyrimid power supply price;) and the $45,000 car in you avitar:D

RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Don't waste your money on Pyramid Garbage power supply. It was rated for 40amps with 35amps continuous. When 18amps are loaded, it cuts out in less than 30min. When I called them, they said the duty cycle is 15min full, 45min idle. What bull**** @#$@#$.
So, it is good enough for 1 astro charger. You are better off getting Radio Shack 25amp switching power supply. Drumbum: You only need one Astro charger. I'm using 3 cause I want to fly it non stop. BTW, the Vette is actuall $53,000. It is a Z06 (405HP) not a regular vette. |
RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
he he,, I thought we sold them cheaper than that. around $45,000 i thought.

RE: Hangar 9 - Extra 260 - Electric Conversion
Does anybody find this thread useful or am I wasting my time? |
