How to torque roll?
Hi N45328!
You have some really cool parents (I should know I got the same plane for my 14 year old son<g>)... or that paper route is really paying off big. ;-) You're going to love the plane... you just stay over on your side of the country, you hear!? ;-) |
How to torque roll?
Hi N45328!
Now you've went and done it... the father in me is coming out. Listen... do you or your family have lots of experience with models this large? If not I'm going to give you a pre-flight check list and some safety procedures. Don't get mad at me... it's just that if you don't have any thumbs it will be alot tougher to come out to California and show me up. :-) |

Hey! Thanks for getting me everything. I have more than enoguh people helping me out. But the check lists is still good to have. Thanks alot!

2-stroke vs 4-stroke for TR's
Whew this thread is getting long. But what good posts. You guys really rock! I have a few more TR questions for you all.
What is better to use in a TR machine, a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke engine? If I use a very low-pitch high-diameter prop in a 2-stroke I get some nice static thrust. I had a YS 63 in a Global Freestyle and it could barely pull out of a hover. I put a Magnum 1.08 2-stroke in the same machine and it hovers at 1/3 throttle and I don't even have it propped right yet, I still have a Master Airblaster 14x8, I'm going to an APC 15x6. I gained about 5 ounces from the conversion but the fuel consumption is the same, and I can run 5% nitro. I went to double servos on the elev and my balance is good. I know the 4-strokes have that low end torque that feels real nice, but for the same weight you can drop in a 2-stroke with literally double the overall power, at half the cost! I'm still working on my TR. I moved my tank over the CG and now I have to upgrade my fuel pump from the Perry VP-20 to the Perry VP-30 as I get no throttle transition at all when I pull it into a hover from idle. -Tom |

Hi Marc!
I understand, sir. No need to tell them about the dangers of posting in this thread until we're certain. Our messages are hidden from the general public, right? <g> |
WIND ?????
Hey JB and John, ya my bleeding heart - right !!
Chris and I were just out flying the 10.5 OZ. Micro Edge in 20 + Gusty MPH breezes - sure makes it a lot of FUN !! I hope for the best JB in regards to your club guidlines in relation to in close hovering etc. Like all of you have said , the main issue is safety and commom curtisy to all other modelers. We belong to a good club (LVRCS) with about 230 members. Overall everyone gets along pretty well and we respect all types of flying. We fly on a large farm and have the luxery of a side L shaped runway that is used for most Helo flying and Fun Fly / 3D practice if the main runway is being used by 1 or more modelers that may not want all this wild and crazy 3D stuff in their face and distracting their flying. I definitly understand , respect and appreciate this common sence and safe guidline / rule ! This is one reason we like to fly on windy / breezy days , as there is often only a few of us out then. But it sure does make TRin and some other manuvers a bit more challenging and interesting for sure ! Good luck to all and keep having FUN !!! If we are not having FUN and enjoying this wonderful Hobby - then we had better look into something else I guess?? Keep em hanging nose up !! Happy Landings , Rod & Chris in PA. |
JBH hows that reflex work?
JBH,
On that pic of your cap on page two it has some reflex in the airlerons. Does that help in the harrier/hover? Have you flown your Edge yet? Did you try reflex on it? Thanks, AAAA |
How to torque roll?
Hi Quadruple A!
About 1/2" flaps at full 3D elevator throw helps stabilize the CAP in harriers and hovers. I'm going to remove mine this weekend, though. I found out they are not allowed in competition... so I don't want to get too used to them. :-) Haven't flown the AW .60 size Edge, yet. Haven't even started building it, yet. I have an OS 1.60 here for it... I still need some more 9411s. My AW 33% Edge is supposed to show up tomorrow... the DA-100 is already here... so the little Edge may have to wait. :-) |
Not allowed?
Who said that spoilerons or flaperons are not allowed? I haven't heard that....

Bean
If the actual full-scale aircraft does not use a specific function such as "spoilerons" its illegal in all forms of competition... |
How to torque roll?
Hi Bean!
I asked a TOC pilot recently whether or not he noticed much difference TR'n with the spoilerons on or off. Because alot of times I just leave them on after going from a harrier to a TR. Being a person of few words he replied, "I don't fly gliders." I then broke out the 2000 TOC tape and sure enough... no spoilerons to be found. |
news
Well I'm glad I don't use them.... I haven't found much benefit to them with my Extra but they sure do lock and drop my buddy's 40% Edge in an Elevator. It is almost a vertical line when they pop up. I have more than enough throw in all of my surfaces to get response for pop ups and Harriers with out them. I guess I will just keep it that way....

Great day with Johnny Rebel & Chris
Hello JB, Wayne,N and All: Very nice extra N - great smoke pics !
It was a beautiful gift of a day here in PA, all blue, sunny and temps around 60 !! (Eat your Heart out JB - LOL) So, Chris (13) and I met up with Johnny Rebel and his brother Chris (age 12) and had a fatastic time flying our butts off with our CAPS and Johnny's nice super lite 23 lb 35 % RC Extra with a superb and very smooth running BME 102 - what an impressive engine and quiet too ! We really had a blast doing all kinds of FUN 3D manuvers ! Chris and I are doing OK I think but man, after flying with Johnny and seeing him do all his magic , we sure do have a looooong way to go ! After Jon flew and did many real nice TR's with our H9 Cappy, I know for sure it is me and my 1/2 dead brain and fingers - he made it look so smooth and esay ! I think Jon's full scale IAC flying has done him a lot of good, as I think he could go to a model IMAC meet and do real well in Advanced and in Freestyle ! He is doing some real nice very low 3D tricks including rudder touches and some real sweet Harrier 4 point rolls and great TR's, etc . . . It is always good to fly and learn from higher level pilots, In just a few minutes Jon helped Chris and I improve a lot in several manuvers including Water Falls. Now We are having even more FUN with our beloved CAP , and I did not think it could get much better - silly me ! Joh's lill brother Chris (12) is also flying great with their older CAP and will be a strong contender real soon, you have an AWESOME teacher Chris ! We sure had a fine day and a lot of FUN !! Will have to get some pics next time to post. Take care and keep em 3Din !! Rod and Chris (13) |

Awesome Vids. Gotta love that DA. The videos makes me miss that field. My parents still live in San Jose. Next time we are out there visiting I'm going to have to look you up. |
