U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
There are three of us at the field with the UCD. We all are using the YS91. You could take me kids, but don't touch my YS ;)

The Saito 100 turns APC 15x6 @ 9400 rpm. It will hover at half throttle. It will pull out of hover, but not like a sling shot. I ought to try the 16x4W.

Well the YS spec's say it has more power so it should work pretty good :D

I have a ys91AC in mine (APC 15-6 - Byron 20/20) and it hovers at about 1/2 throttle or one click below. I wouldn't say it "rockets" out of a climb but it sure does it with enough power save your butt.

OS 91 Surpass II
I have the OS using Wildcat 10% and it'll hover at half to slightly over half throttle. It has plenty of power to hover, tailslide, and pull back out vertically. So far I've tried an APC 14-6 and a 15-4W, and they're real close, but I think I like the 14-6 better overall. Great airplane, and a whole lot of fun for the 189dollar asking price.

U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
did my first three flights this morning, I have the CG set to 5" back from LE. Same engine OS91 surpass II and I can't seem to get it to hover. It doesn't seem to be a power issue, it seems to fall to either side randomly. Possibly CG needs to be moved back a bit???
|
same thing
I had the same thing, I bumped my expos way up on my 3d rates, I'm at -90% now. More importantly, I moved my CG to 6" and now it's soo much better! It also required less mix to knife edge. Harrier is better too, much less wing rock.

eness76 and Davey_flier,
I haven't got my U-Can-Do yet - on backorder from the LHS, but I plan on using my OS 91 Surpass II. What size batteries are you guys usin and can you just move the battery around to get an aft cg? Do you have to cut a hatch in the aft fuse (like I did on my H9 UStick with a 1200 mah nicad) to get the cg back? I hate to add lead. |
U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
Hey Gbee:
I'm using a 6V 2700maH NiMh and I can move it aft to change the balance.I didn't need to cut a hole in the fuse (I also have an ultra stick and I had to cut a hole in that). Moving the battery around in the radio compartment should work fine... |

mine is a 6v 1400 in the rear of fuse, cut hatch in the back, i ahve a saito 120 so i needed the tail weight
thx chris |
U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
I put 5 flights on mine today (first day of flying) and it pulls quite hard to the left on the uplines, I will definitely need to add a couple of washers to shim it on the left side momo. Right now CG is 5" and I'll be moving it back another inch to try and get it to hover, but this plane is sweet to fly, not as snappy as my Giles but still very nice.

I put 2 washers behind my motor mount from the start, and it's pretty close now, it could use 1 more to be perfect, but I got my cowl perfect and don't want it to look crappy, so on hover I just hang on to a little right rudder.
I used a 4.8volt 1800mah battery all the way to the rear former in the "radio bay" and it still needed tail weight. To get to 6", I needed 2.75ounces right at the tailwheel. I just put another half ounce for this weekend's festivities, as hovers were noticably easier at the end of the tank of fuel. Once i get the CG exactly where I like it, I'll probably cut a hatch and move the battery rearward to reduce overall weight. |
U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
I had the 15x4W. Pull out wasn't that good. Iput on a 14x4w this morning and the pull out was much better. I moved my cg back a little. I am going to move it back a little more. I don't know where the CG is because the plane had fuel in it. I had 2 washer between motor mount and firewall. I need a little more. So I went to install another 1 and a blind nut fell out back into the fuselage. So I packed it up and went home.
I stopped by hobby shop on way home and picked up some longer control arms for elevator. So I can get more throw out of elevators. But I am slowly getting this thing dialed in. |
U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
As I stated in the post above my Saito 91 APC 15x4W, 15/16 bryon fuel just didn't pull out of a hover too well. It peaked at 9100RPM flew it at 8800. I installed a 14x4W, my RPMS increased to 10,900 I set it to fly at 10,400. And my pull out is better. It still doesn't shoot out of a hover, but it does pull out better. I couldn't tell any differance in hovering. I was amazed that my RPMs increased 1800.
I can't comment for harriers, because my CG was to far foward. I moved it back some more tonight. My max throw would only give me 2" on elevator. So I bought and installed longer control horns for my servos. I can now get max throw of 3 1/2" I am now at 3 washers between motor mount and firewall. That should now be set. Today when I was flying it w/ just 2 washers. I had to add a little right rudder on uplines, and substained hovers. So I am hoping 3 washers will get it set. Depending on weather, I should fly it on Sat. and I will update everybody on my flight performance. |

This will be a "FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH" reply, I had the first you can do in this part of calif. and used a Saito 91 and it has enough power to do everything except sustain long periods of torque rolling. when the motor faded a little on me, I planted the tail like corn! We built a new one and used the Saito 100 with a 16x4 APC and it works great. However I strongly recomend a lighter wing loaded model such as the JR models. Diabloten Super or the flip 3D for awesome slowflight 3D. 17.6 per sq and 7.5lbs = sort of a tank (no pun intended) DAVE

RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
A good friend of mine has a YS .63FZ on his UCD46 and I hear that it does an awsome job. I bought the exact same set up myself and will maiden on Sat. I cant wait !. .....During break in this engine pulled like a horse !.... This plane seems to have a great power to weight ratio using this engine.

RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
I have a YS 140 on mine with a 15x8. Vertical climb out is unlimited. I had to put the RX battery all the way in the tail. It still floats on landing. No regrets here!
|
RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
YS 140 with a 15x8 sounds smokin. I'm thinking about putting my Saito 150 on mine. The 91 is not enough.
Any comments on that? |
RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
I dont understand why you guys get 4 strokes? A saito 100 has 1.8 hp and costs $280?? My towerhobbies 61 bb abc cost $85 and has 1.9 hp. Can someone explain this to me??
Thanks just my $.02 |
RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
1 Attachment(s)
I have a ys91 ac on mine with a 16x6 apc it will hover under 1/2 thr. tryed a 16x4 dident like it at all.
|
RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
I think there comes a point where the power to weight ratios are better with smaller than larger engines.
Just a thought but attack me if you wish. |
RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
halfandhalf825
Forget about the HP numbers as they're just about worthless unless you know how they're measured and at what RPM they're measured at. Each manufacture does his numbers a little differently.... As for the four stroke thing, I really can't describe the instant power surge that I get when I wrap the throttle on my YS91. You really need to fly a plane with a high end 4 stroke to understand. Once you do, I doubt that tower 61 will stay on the front of your plane long :D. |

RE: U-Can-Do what motor do you really need
Lota guys are goin over to a YS 110. Not much heavier than a S 100 but plenty of snot. Nice part is the YS is pumped, no need for a regulator for placeing the tank on the CG. Joe
