CAP 580 , few Q&A's

Well its time to go with a sport plane ! Iv'e been real busy with buying a new house and so on so my hobby was set to the back burner .

I'm thinking about the cap 580 with the .70 4 stroke for now . What can and can't I do with this plane ?

waterfalls ?
flat spins ?

Also how good is this plane on slow flight ? sometimes I like to cruise around at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle and do some low flying, not sure if this can really be done with htis plane or not .

How does this cap 580 compare to a Edge 540, both 40 size ?

Current planes
NexSTAR
.25 on a Lazy Tiger
.46 Ultrastick

Whoaa. Just up front, you gotta know the GP Cap 580 in the .40 size version is not a 3D plane. I love mine with a Saito 72 up front but the plane has almost a 30oz/sq.ft. wing loading. Mine has no lead or added weight in it, I just scooted the rx and battery around to get the CG where it needed to be, it weighs in at 6lbs.10oz. Great sport plane, but cant 3D. No walls, it just high speed stalls and rolls over, waterfalls? The recomended throws on the elevator is only 3/8" so no again. Adding more motor will only push the wing loading higher so that wont work. Its a great flying plane and I wouldnt trade it for anything but this is not the one for harrier torq rolls.

That said, it just puts around very lady like at 1/4 power on the 72 and swinging a 12-6 prop. At 1/2 throttle one can loop and roll all day. At full power on the groung the 72 swings the 12-6 at 11,400 rpm so it will unload in the air by a few hundered rpm and its a wild ride! Bang both sticks in the uper-right corner after you pull vertical for a few hundered feet and it tumbles so hard and fast I keep looking for the pilot to be thrown thru the canopy! The plane points really well, and the way it point rolls looks just like the second hand on a stopwatch! I've gotten it do do a sort-of Parachute from inverted flight but its rate of fall doesnt slow but it flatens out and the rotation in the spin almost stops. It looks very cool but not very 3D like. Because of the wing loading you really need to be ahead of it mentaly all the time and its set-up and flight trimming are VERY important. Mine would roll out of a loop on the first flights. Told me that one wing was heavier than the other. Once I had that fixed the plane was perfect from there on. If you get one you'll love it but 3D with something else. Mike

That sucks , I was hoping I could hovver with it and do some real cool tricks like flat spins and stuff like that ..

How would a Edge 540 do for me ?

No, It does not suck. It flys just as it was intended to. You must remember that the words Cap, Extra, Edge and Ultimate do not mean 3D automaticly. Planes by those names dont really have the capablity to untill the sizes go up to 27% scale size and larger which means LARGE engines. Funny how newbies veiw the value of models and the intent for which they were designed....

The better planes for 3D in the 40-50 size range are mainly the profile birds, there are other type coming on the market all the time. You'll be looking for a plane at 5lbs or less to hover and 3D well.

If your looking for a .40 sized plane that a blast to fly and can 3D I would suggest the Funtana .40, I have one with a .72 saito in it and it is a blast I love it!!

I know of one with a satio 100 in it that does walls and parachutes (sp?) with out the dreaded cap snap. It is just nuts!! positive and neg blenders are insane!!! upright flat spins look like the target on the bottom is staying still. Not good for harriers and such, but a very good tumbler.
