Whats the best smoke setup?
 

Just picked up a H9 Extra 300L with a BME102, and I want to put a smoke system in it,, I was thinking of going with a TME electric pump, but Wouldnt an electric pump supply to much smoke oil when your at low RPM's or idle while doing some 3D flying?

I'm new to smoke... only two installations so far. But, my DA-100 with TME smokes the best at low rpms. I smoke up a storm in elevators, harriers and while TR'n (I'm going to put some video up on my website soon... I need to get my own video capture card rather than using my neighbors<g>). However, I had to use four check valves and a 2' loop of fuel line near the pump to get it smoking decent at higher rpms. Seems that with the increased pressure in the mufflers I would keep losing the prime. Works okay now with the added check valves and 2' loop.

I'd like to even get more smoke out of it... I'd like the plane to just disappear in it. :-)

Anything from the experienced smokers?

Im using a tme smoke pump in couple planes now. Smokes like a train. I had to restrict line by about half. When Hanging on the prop my plane will almost disappear. The worst part about the smoke is clean up. What a slimy mess. this is a picture that was in our club newsletter.

Yowza! That looks good! At what exact location did you put the clamp? What size engine? What mufflers? Matter of fact<g>... can you describe the layout A-Z? :-)

This is a pirate extra 260. Had for about 4-5 yrs. 102 inch wingspan with 3w70 twin. Very light though. Hangs at about 7 clicks of throttle. Johnson mufflers and simple smoke system. I just put a wheel collar over the line going to the mufflers, and tightend the set screw crushing the hose about half way. I actually used a bolt instead of set screw so as not to put a hole in the line. I dont have any check valves, so when I turn off the smoke it still smokes a little til it burns off. I should probably tighten it a little more, like i said this thing is a mess when I land. especially after hanging on the prop. slimy all over .......:( :( :( :( :(

I also have one in my stinger and carden cap. The stinger smokes just as good. I havent turned on the smoke in the cap because its loaded with graphics and decals and I worry about wrecking a good looking plane.

is that a cap your flying next to your name. Love to see your videos. Let me know when youve got them running. Off the path a bit but heres pic of my carden cap. Im really wanting a edge pretty bad now. Was just checking out the prices of an aeroworks arf edge 540t. At $ll00 bucks thats not bad. Had my heart set on the 35% carden but the price just went up to $800 for the kit. Im running a 3w100 in my 35%cap

Hi guys, just wondering if electric pumps supply to much oil when at low RPM's or idle while doing certain 3D moves? Is there a chance of bogging down the engine? And do you use a seperate battery pack for the pump?

Ive had 2 different kinds of smoke pumps. The first one I had was just an electric pump with it s own battery, actuated by a micro switch from a servo on seperate channel. worked fine but when It wore out I installed tme simple smoke.

Much simpler to use. its an electric pump that just plugs into seperate channel. Dont need extra servo or switch.

As far as loading up on low rpm manuvers, Ive never had that problem. I mostly use it when Im doing low speed manuvers, that is probably why my plane gets so messy. There might be some extra smoke fluid running out not burning off. But if you think about it, the muffler is hot even at low rpm.

Sorry Im not full of knowledge, I just pump the stuff in and turn the switch on when I want smoke. How it works and why it works is not important to me, Just that it works.

I've got a tme pump thats been collecting dust for a long time and cant remember if I need a seperate battery pack or if it plugs into the rx for power.

it takes a seperate battery pack. 500 ma is plenty.

ps. just rember to make sure your smoke switch is off on your transmitter when you start the plane. Other wise your buddy that is holding the plane, tends to get angry.

The TME pump is one of the best but instead of using a wheel collar to restrict the flow use a remote needle valve from one of the smaller engines. Place the needle valve in line with the smoke oil line and the flow can be regulated just like you would the flow to the carb.:cool:

Can someone show me how the TME system is setup on a plane. I have the first version of the pump (bought it almost 4 years ago)...I used it on a goldberg chipmunk once. I got the smoke only on the ground, but not while it was flying. Infact I removed the tme system after that 2-3 adventurous flights. My engine kept quitting on me. I believe the reason was that I had not tapped an extra hole on the muffler for the engine back pressure. The existing hole on the muffler had the tube from the TME system.

Now after reading this post, I want to dig out the TME pump and give it a go again. I would be obliged if someone can mail me a schematic of their setup ([email protected]). Also why was I getting smoke on the ground and not while it was in the air?

BTW, the engine is an OS 91 four stroke with stock muffler and w/o a pump.

For starters you need a smoke muffler. The stock muffler that comes with the 91 wont work. What you were doing is just dumping smoke oil into the muffler and some prob was getting into the motor making it quit. The nipple on the muffler was just for pressure for the fuel system.

A smoke muffler has coils inside that preheat the smoke oil then dumps it into the hot muffler where it smokes. I have seen some articles in mags for homemade preheating systems, but seems like too much work. Best thing to do is go out and look for a smoke muffler.

You got smoke on the ground because the muffler was hot and if you would of waited the smoke would of quit even on the ground.
