wow ur gettin' ahead of me! i haven't been workin' on mine too hard because i'm still putting together this electric with a new power system ect. i have built one ailo and found that they didn't go so fast, mainly because i work real slow and also ran out of pins.

Joined Fuse Sides

1 Attachment(s)
I got the two fuse sides joined today. I used 30 minute epoxy to glue the 2 pieces of a side together. It looked awfully weak. I made a small effort to strengthen it without adding much weight. I didn't do much because I put my faith in the company to design a model that doesn't need too much extra. So I glassed the joint. I just used 30 min. epoxy and whatever glass I had laying around. It's very very fine and thin, I think it might be .50 oz/yd or foot or however people measure this. The next two pictures show how I did it. I've never glassed before, so I've no idea if I did it right. I figured I couldn't make it any weaker, and I didn't use much 'glass or epoxy, so I didn't add much weight. Seemed like a good thing to try. I then put a piece of scotch tape over the joint and smoothed it out. This also squeegeed the excess epoxy out of the glass too.

More light!

I got 2 new lamps for my workbench. I'm now flooded with light and my camera no longer requires a flash to take these pictures.

Started real work on the fuse today. I got some longerons installed as well as a doubler for the joint I just 'glassed. It's coming along!

LASER 3D

:p Hey Reid & All, enjoying the post on the Laser. We just finished framing ours up. Has come out real well and weighs just under 2 lbs with no equipment ! Hope it will be under 5 lbs RTF with new Magnum 61 FS. ;) Have Fun, Rod & Chris in PA.

:p Here is a pic of the turtle deck. We cut strips out of the sheeting provided and added gussets at each former. Just trying to save a bit of weight. Rod & Chris ;)

;) Here is a pic of the tip. Decided to go with a 1/2 size tip to keep it looking decent. If it woobles in harriers we will add in some reflex mixing to smooth it out. Rod & Chris :p

:) Here is a pic of Chris with it, says he can't wait to TR this baby down on the deck and have a BLAST with it !! Must say , they are a nice looking plane and a decent size too. Would be real sweet to make an 80 or so inch size soon !!?? Have FUN ! Rod & Chris :p

That's a good idea about lightening the turtle deck sheeting. I'll have to think about that when it comes time. I got my rudder servo today. A Hitec 5625MG Digital. This is my first digital and I bought it so I could hear my plane "hum" like the 40%s at the field but this one doesn't hum! You know the hum I'm talking about? The hum the JR 8411s make? Oh well. I thought it might be funny to have a 40 sized plane that hummed, but such is not the case.

Hey Reid, well - BA HUM BUG then ! or NO HUM BUG in your case.
Yep , know about the digital HUM for sure. We have 2 big Digitals in our 36 % AW Edge on rudder and they do HUM. Looking forward to getting this Laser going ! SB a great 3D practice plane for IMAC meets next year. Here is a pic of Chris (14) with our Edge , after winning a IMAC Freestyle meet in NY this past summer, he really loves to SPANK this thing ! It is awesome with the Rip Snorten DA-100, sounds like a Harley in the air. Way Cool !
Have FUN and Happy Holidays ! Rod & Chris :p

Well, I got a lot done since my last post. I got the engine mount built, the second former built and the wing hold down mechanism built. I got the fuse sides framed up but I just don't know what glue to use quite yet so I'm going to wait a few days. I also ordered my servos. So here's the final servo layout:
Rudder: Hitec 5625 Digital
Elevators: Hitec HS-225BB (1 per half)
Ailerons: Hitec HS-225BB (1 per aileron)
Throttle: Hitec HS-81 Micro

This servo setup is saving roughly 3 ounces over standard servos. WooHoo!

Laser 3D

hello Reid, sounds like it is going well ! Have not worked on ours this week- need to do some more fiilling and sanding before covering and painting. Just a word of warning on the HS225 BB's - we used HS225MG's in our seduction on all surfaces and had the rudder servo go in flight from stripped gears and the alomost crashed twice because the alirons would not center well and twice locked up on us ?????? Put new nylon gear(1 of 2 nylons , others are metal) in the rudder servo and replaced the aliron servos with JR8231's - it is flying great now with no more problems ! I am not trying to bash Hitec as I use a lot their servos and other products and like them a lot. Just not very good luck with the 225MG's. Good luck with finishing the Laser, it SB an awesome plane for sure ! Rod :p

My overkill plan for the servo on my Laser 3D is;

JR DS 8411 SA x2 for the ailerons (one each)
JR DS 8231 x2 for the elevators (one each)
JR DS 8411 for the rudder
JR 341 for the throttle

Duralites plus battery and their regulator.

Fuse Fuse Fuse!

1 Attachment(s)
I got rockin' with the fuse today. Got everything square, then glued it all. Then remembered I forgot to add a piece! Aaaah! But I took about 1/8" off the interlock tab and it finally was forced into place. Got the tank support in (backwards because I don't think it matters), and I just glued on the engine mount tonight using 24 hour epoxy. I figured of all places, this is where the epoxy would really pay off. Still having a hard time with the idea of a wooden engine mount. Here are the pics!

Reid

Here's the wing hold down mechanism. Someone tell me if this is installed improperly. I don't think it is, but I just have a bad feeling. :)

Okay! I got more of the fuse done tonight. I glued in all the top formers. I did this while I was waiting for the landing gear block to dry. I used wood glue on the gear so it will be 24 hours before it's done. The fuse formers fit very very nicely.

Hey did anyone notice that there are places for 7 servos in the plane? 3 on the radio board, 2 on the wing, 2 in the tail. Why's there an extra one or am I too tired to see what should be obvious?

It's coming along!

Here's a nice shot of the sightline. Everythings nice and straight. Not that the camera angle helps you see that! :D

HOLY MACKERAL!!!

wow u are really getting ahead of me!!! my thread is falling behind; must catch up!!! well i have a full day to work on it tommorow, so here i come!!!

having trouble deciding wut engine mount i should use. i have a nice dubro shockabsorber, but i don't really want to take the time and trouble to drill, tap, fill, redrill, etc. is it worth it to go through all that for the mount???

I got the bottom sheeting installed. I think I'm going to add some serious lightening holes to this bottom sheeting. This piece was a brick, and I don't think it needs this much. You might be able to see in the picture the penciled in areas for cutting. I also got the landing gear installed, put in one servo to decide where to put the pull pull housing, then installed those too. Here are the pics.

I haven't posted much, but my hour before bed worktime has continued. I think I'm really only one session behind. I got the turtle deck sheeted after doing some more research and finding out that it does indeed increase torsional strength. So I sheeted that. Here's that picture.

Continued in next post...
