UCD with a 60 size motor
 

Well I took my TT 91 FS off and slapped on a KRAFT .61 swinging a apc 14 x 4 prop. Flew it this morning and was able to hover pretty easy, and have "what everybody would call" about 1/2 throw left on my NoN-Linear throttle setting. I also have the a prop wrench zipped tied to the firewall because the .61 doesn't weigh as much as my TT 91 FS did. So now I will move the battery to balance it better and remove the prop wrench and see how it flies. LOVE this airplane!

Yeah, I was thinking my OS 91FX was kinda overkill, but it's the same weight as a 61!!! You can always throttle back, lol..

BTW - Were is your CG with the 61 in the nose? Mine is about 5" back from the leading edge with the 91fx, and I'm ready to make a batt hatch further back...

Try it without the prop wrench and see how she flies!

Well, it really never got fun.

Lost my UCD yesterday.

91FX with remote needle is worthless for 3D. Very very disappointed in the motor. Cost me a plane.

Motor quit after pop up, 10 foot off the ground. Did a great tail slide to the ground. Wasted the tail surfaces, didn't hurt the fuse much, wing sounds like a baby rattle. Gave to a guy at the field.

I know, I know, should have done a stroker.

When you play low, you can get bit. I got bit hard yesterday.

BATTERY FAILURE - LOST TOTAL CONTROL. IT WAS A NICE FLYING PLANE WITH THAT SATIO100. I WOULD LIKE ANOTHER ONE, BUT ALSO THINKING ABOUT THE WORLD MODELS FUN 3D. WE WILL SEE.

YNOT, Did those trouble makers at your field try and start trouble with you about the low to the ground 3D flying stuff after the crash?

LOL, No, I was flyn at my club field. They don't give me grief. They all know how I fly. However the peanut gallery did have some several choice comments, all in good fun :-)

Comments like: Gas doesn't die like that, nice tail slide, how much was that new pipe, the clear tape hatch cover seems to still be working and the popular "look!!, you didn't even break the prop"

The field that has given problems in the past is a public field.

So the question is Ynot....

Can someone explain what the remote needle is? I was thinking of putting an OS 1.08 that i had in inventory into my UCD, it has the remote needle valve. I also need suggestions for a good muffler or pipe that will give me even more umph! Links would be great.

Hi,

The UCD3D looks pretty cool... but the name is kind of.... lame? All the pics of the plane that I have been able to see have the u-can-do 3d written on the side and wing... on the arf.... is the name (Hopefully) a sticker that you can just not put on? Or does it come with the lame name put on it already?

The new Magnum 91 2-stroke, which looks like a copy of the 91 FX, has on-carb needle as well as the remote needle option. Being cheaper and probably just as powerful, this should be a good 2-stroke engine for the UCD.

I have a YS 120 in inventory that I am considering putting into my new UCD3D. Has anyone out there used this motor in a UCD3D?
I would like to hear more about your experience. Was it overpowered? Over weight? Did you need much tail weight? Did you mount your tank at the CG? What size tank did you use? What prop did you use? What motor mount did you use? Were you happy with the flight characteristics?

1. Yes, I have my YS 120 in my UCD.
2. No, I do not feel that my UCD is overpowered, but I fly at 5200'
3. Weight comes in right at 8lb
4. Used 3oz tail weight to take CG to 6" back.
5. Yes, my tank is at the CG.
6. Using kit supplied tank and always land with plenty of fuel for 15m flight.
7. I am happiest I think with a Zinger 16 X 5
8. Kit supplied motor mount.
9. Hovers easy and is fun to fly, but I have not flown a 7lb UCD either.

It's coming!
 

My I-Can't-Do-3D is coming, but unfortunately, it has a broken wing according to Chief. I had them sent it anyway so I can work on it at least. The replacement wing should be here in couple of weeks. I have a NIB YS 1.20 NC that I'm planning on putting in.

You guys sold me on the plane. I am holding out for the new YS 110 to power it.I can always put an old ,very OLD YS 91AC in the nose for now. The YS really gives you confidence that the engine will respond when you are 6 feet of the ground and pointed straight up.

I am flying mine on a YS 120 FS W/16-6 prop...Outstanding performance. Hovers 1/3 stick and accelerates out of a hover like a missle. I placed the tank on the CG and 1200 mak batts. in the tail. Cannot make it flat spin yet.......I think I still need to move the Cg back, right now it is snowing. Next break in the weather and I will try then....This engine plane combo is AWESOME

Is anyone running standard servos on the elevators and/or ailerons? I have some 3001's that need a home and I read in the other forum that some guys were going to try standards to see if they would end up stripping. Did they work?

Theres a new notice on the greatplanes website that talks about overpowering your UCD. They STRONGLY advise against it, due to its light weight.

APC has made a 14-5N for quite a few years . Might be worth a try if you use your OS 91FX again .

How are you guys routing your antenaes? Are you routing out of the fuse or leaving it inside the fuse? How about some pics?

I have an OS 61 SF with a pump that puts out a lot of power. I had ordered a UCD for this engine, but it appears from reading here that most feel that this would be an inadequate engine for this airframe. Should I look for more power, or are there a number of silent types out there running a 61 and happy with the flight characteristics?

Henery: It will not hurt to try that combo since you have it already. You will probably have to use a big dia low pitch prop. Let us know how she works. Is it warm enough to fly where you live??????? Might have to wait for warm day... Good Luck Captinjohn :)

We flew today, temps about 40 and quite windy.
