Don't get it...please explain
Don't flame me, but I watched the video's and read the posts and have a question for you guys who do 3D. Why do you use a plane for a helicopter? Why not just fly helicopters??
|
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Simple, it's harder to do with a mini rotor on the front and no tail rotor! Hey, enjoy the challenge - whatever blows wind up your skirt!
|
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Because it's a very unusual and difficult way to fly a plane. So it's fun to do once you master it. People get bored of the same old thing. Not everyone likes heli's. I prefer the planks.

RE: Don't get it...please explain
Yea. And what's this thing about golf - hit a ball, chase after it ,hit it again.? What's the fun in that? And don't even start on fishing.
3d airplane flying involves combining airframe lift with prop thrust to produce maneuvers that aircraft rarely do, but can be graceful and exciting when done right. One reason fliers get hung up on it is it isn't easy to do and takes a lot of practice to do well. |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Because it annoys the left turn only fliers[sm=lol.gif]
And the heli fliers don't like to be beaten at their own game[:-] PS, I'm only kidding, I do it because its a challenge, and the desire for lighter stronger models that fly true is pushing the hobby forward |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
I did get a helicopter, then I started flying it like a plane.
|
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Because hovering a helicopter is just hovering. Hovering a plane is aerobatics!

Why not just fly helicopters?? 3D flight is so much more than just hovering, it takes a lot of practice and a lot of control to perform all those manuevers. Consider it "advanced aerobatics"... Flying a heli, and flying a plane 3D is two totally different things. (Let's not even talk about heli 3D flight - THOSE guys are nuts! LOL! ;) ) |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Planes are cheaper to fix than helis:D It is fun, unusual, but becoming popular, and challenging. kinda breaking the rules a bit, when people say its not suposed to fly like that.
But most of all its fun, and gives you a sense of accomplishment when you get it right. and it looks COOL. |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
i am not sure i would still be flying if it was not for 3d. i have mild interest in precision, but 3d is what i come back for every chance i get. a perfect rolling harrier is a thing of beauty. with 3d, the plane is close and you can see every surface doing it's job. you can hear the engine and smell the smoke. i feel both the violence of it and grace at the same time, and that is very attractive to certain guys. i say guys because women do not crave these things.

RE: Don't get it...please explain
For me, it's all about the challenge to learn it & the awe factor. If a heli fly's by & stops at a hover, it's well umm, just a heli stopping and hovering. But If a plane pulls a wall into a hover & torque rolls, it's cool as crap & you have all the kids in the stands going nuts. I know it's not considered "scale" aerobatic's but if you watch all of the top full scale aerobatic pilot's they're doing everything they can to increase power & lighten load so they can hover & torque roll, so it really isn't all that "non scale" anymore. ;)

yeah, so thats the reasons. wasn't it obvious?

RE: Don't get it...please explain
For me it's fun and blood pumping to do 3D, and learning to do what a "plane"
should not be doing... I like all aspects of model flight, I would like to be "OK" in all types of flight.... Don't knock a mode of flying.. The main thing to me, is safety and respect for all.... It's all fun, and we all can be safe and enjoy our style of flight........ And it'll help the growth of our hobby.... ( I could do without some of that, I hate waiting to fly:D) But there could be other benifits with a bigger group in our hobby.... |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Didnt we run through these types of threads about 3 years ago??
Fly what you like, dont crap on the other guy cause he aint doing what you do. |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
Well said Wayne.

Don't worry these threads will pop up every now and then until the end of time.

RE: Don't get it...please explain
So my question about rc 3d has been answered.thank you for no flames LOL..I prefer left turns myself (Ummm Nascar??) Now...Any full scale pilots doing this??? Could it be done full scale?? Any videos?? Would a real pilot risk that?? Would you risk it??
|
RE: Don't get it...please explain
power to weight ratio is the big difference between RC models and Full scale.... There are a few "3D" things you could do in a full scale aircraft, but most moves just arent possible. you could hover for a small amount of time, but pulling out usually is out of the question.

RE: Don't get it...please explain
Because it is a challenge. I have been flying RC for 45 years and thought I had seen it all. But a visit to an indoor show introduced me to 3D. Paul Heckles was "flying" a Limbo Dancer with a MDS 38 in a 40ft high 100ft round area. Hanging, high alpha rolling circles, tail touches, wow just blew me away. I went out and bought one. I still have it and the covering is faded.
I have a range of models from 1/4 scale bipes down to 6inch span TEE DEE 010 deltas, but my 3D Sledge gets more airtime than anything else. Why because it is fun and I still can not do a good low torque roll. |
RE: Don't get it...please explain
I 3d because i want to. simple as that. i think it's fun, and i love doing it.

RE: Don't get it...please explain
Because WE can.....
