The re-timed GWS 370 pull around 9-10 amps. You should be fine with a 15 amp controller.

Got my plane cut out yesterday, now all i need to do is round up a motor, speed controller, and Batteries.
Do any of you have some good links for GWS products?
TIA

I have given up on bluecor, what do you have to do to sturdyboard to get the paper off? Soaking it in the tub for an hour or so, right?

=XGC= OzZ 05-28-2003 11:30 AM

thats cool

Really cool...

Skypro - Soak the sturdyboard in warm water for about an hour or so, then peel the paper off. Sometimes a little scrubbing with a spnge helps. It's messy, but it works...

Stomper - www.aeromicro.com or www.edogfight.com or www.allerc.com are good places to get this stuff. The GWS gearbox (GWS EPS300C (DS) ) comes with the motor. Get a few 12x6 GWS props too. As for speed controllers, the GWS stuff is OK, I would go for the Castle Creations Pixie 20P. The CC speed controller is the best I have used. www.nesail.com has good prices on the CC controllers. Don't get anything less than a 15 amp controller.

I just flew mine yesterday with the GWS gearbox (DS) and a Razor RZ350 brushless, 3s E-Tec Lipos, GWS 12x6 prop and the power was absolutly sick! I have never flown a plane, gas or electric, with that much power! If you look at the end of the video a couple of posts up, it will power out of the hover like that 15 min. into the pack. Didn't get any video as nobody was around to film for me. Here's a link to the Razor site. www.razormotors.com Very reasonable prices too!

Have fun guys and post pics!

gotta have one

Tim,
I looked at your vids I have gotta get one of these to mess around in the yard.. It looks awesome.. I have gotta get a list of all the things I need. I have never flown electric but this looks to good to pass up. I don't have access to the foam you guys are using I don't believe. I will have to look for an alternative any thoughts? What kinda $$ outlay you looking at for an all up plane with the bigger motor in it?
Thanks
Jeff

got to ask

do you think a geared or direct drive speed 400 would hover these planes? Would be nice if possibly. Thanks, BAD ANDY

How thick is the blue cor you designed the plane around?

fan fold is 1/4 inch.

stomper 05-29-2003 08:57 AM

Hey RCadd1ct

The blue cor is 1/4" thick. It comes in one piece folded up 4'x2' x50'

Blue core fan fold is 3/16" thick and the pink fanfold is 1/4" thick.

Maineflyer - You should be able to get the fan fold up there in Maine. Check the big home improvement stores. If you have a Lowe's anywhere nearby you can order it. Give me a list of the equipment you've got and we can go from there. If you can't find the blue core, there is a dealer that is going to be selling Depron in the US soon. Or you can go to WalMart, go to the school supply area, get a couple of sheets of "Sturdy Board" This is great stuff, but you have to soak it in water to get all of the paper backing off. (peel the paper off both sides, then soak it in the tub for a few hours and scrub the rest off) Pain in the rear, but it works. Once Depron is readily available in the US, I will quit using bluecore all together.

Here's a ballpark for the brushless setup:

Razor RZ350 and Castle creations Phoenix 25 controller combo is $143.95 at www.castlecreations.com

GWS EPS300C "DS" gearbox (comes with the motor) $17.45 at http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/gws...ds__803630.htm

10 tooth (DS) Pinion for the Razor motor $1.45 http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/gws...es_1707137.htm

Battery, 8-Cell 9.6V AAA 720 mAH Ni-MH Flat Pack $25.95 http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/8-c...ck_1221781.htm You may be able to find cheaper packs, but not a bad price here.

Servos, 3 Hitec HS55's at www.servocity.com $19.00 a piece or at your LHS

Foam, $27 bucks for 4'x50' sheet feet of it...

Reciever, depends on what you have I use a JR 700 small reciever with the case taken off and shrink wrapped. You will save yourself about 70 bucks by not going brushless, but the performance is worth EVERY penny.

Lipo batteries, don't worry about that yet. Kind of another big cost (but worth it) Figure out if you want to keep going with electrics first, then make the Lipo plunge. I was a die hard gasserhead untill about a year ago. I also fly some 150mph electric ducted fans too. I do still have my H9 Edge/Saito 180, and my .60 size Eagle Freya heli-chopter. I have seen the electric "light" and have not looked back. I'm hooked for sure!

Hope this info helps...

The only foam that I can get is the 3/8" green foam. Will this work, or will I have a total dog of a plane? Thanks

Bad Andy - speed 400 is too heavy for this application.

torquerollin - 3/8 is pretty thick and too heavy. I'd go for the WalMart sturdy board option...

that would be too heavy, use the sturdy board. I may have to do this myself when I build this in about a month.(Maybe :D )

I would do everything you can to get bluecor before you get the sturdyboard. With the paper removed, it is terribly flexible. I built a wing for the 3DX out of paperless sturdyboard, but I had to add so much fiber tape and carbon fiber, it was very heavy. Have someone at your nearest Lowes order it from a different Lowes, that is what I am going to do (The Lowes over on the east side are closed now.) Good luck if you use the sturdyboard, just be prepared to use a lot of tape and cf. I will post a pic of my wing once my camera battery gets charged up.

New Edge wing and Tail

I decided to put a new wing and Tail on mine. Flys the same pretty much. It seems to roll a little faster. This thing is so fun. Just wish I could find the blue stuff. I am not to thrilled about the pink but it does fly good.

OK guys, here's the new videos. Both videos are the same, just one is bigger and better quality for broadband connections.

I'm getting 27 minute flights of fully 3D capable with the brushless/LiPoly combo. The last hover punch out at the end of the vid was at the 25min. mark

Amazing!

I've got one cut out, but still need a power plant. Only have the 300C and some 7 cell NiMh packs now. You are going to make me spend money, aren't you? ;)

Maiden Flight

First flight this morning, have been waiting for a calm morning, 6am and she flies great, I have allot to learn with the rudder, but this thing turns and rolls like a gas powered plane. Getting about 7 minute flights ( 3 of them so far ) with the GWS 300C, "D" retimed motor, 9.6v, 720 Ni-Mh, and 1260 prop. I could not find the carbon fiber rod, so I installed 3/16" dowels, seem to be plenty of strength. Looking forward to tomorrow morning.

300C with C gearing

JoeBob, While I was waiting for my "D" gearing to show up, I balanced the plane and did some runs with the 1260 prop on it, the "C" geared motor got pretty warm after running it a minute or so, it would raise the plane out of my hand. I also took it to work and weighed it, 11.8 ounces ready to fly.

Wow, that thing looks great. Way better than pinky. I just got done flying mine in about 15 to 20 mph wind. It still handles ok for as light as it is. Good luck on that rudder. Practice practice practice.

Glad everybody is having so much fun!!!!!

Flash18 - Looks great! Isn't it fun!

Great news for you guys that can't get fan fold (and for those of you that can too) www.depronusa.com just opened up and we in the USA can get Depron foam now (way better than fan fold) The 6mm Depron sheet is about the same thickness as the fan fold. The Depron coms in 2mm, 3mm, and 6mm. I need to get some to see what sizes to use. Fuse and wing 6mm, control surfaces 3mm.

Also, I just finished the plans in single page format. You can take it to kinko's and have it printed, or do it yourself if your lucky enough to have access to a plotter. Be sure to read the readme file included.

1 page plans

Oh, here is a sneek peek of things to come... Ultimate Bipe...
