:)gjeffers...
"Ditto" How much does that thing weigh? She's a real nice looking airplane. I'll bet when you get the hang of it, it will 3D like crazy. KE is supposed to be particularly easy and pretty with a bipe. Also harrier. Good luck thanks Barry |

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
EL ****CANO.. Sorry about your mishap!! Should be able to get her back in a short time...
It's bad enough when you make the mistake... But equipment failure/letdown... Well that suk's But it is the way of our beloved hobby.... |

Thanks guys, it weighs 11lbs11oz Barry and i dont think this model is a 3Der, should knife good, stall turns stuff like that but she feels heavy in the air, about the same squares as the 60 size ucd, almost 1100 but 3.5 lbs heaver, but i di like it for what it is;)
oh no EL ****CANO[X(], thats what happened to mine a few months ago, looked similar but i had no main left wing left also[:@]like Ron said, just happens and then you spend more money, thats the fun part:) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Man! I leave for a few days to fish and lots of stuff happens. Great job with the bipe Gary!!! [8D]:D[X(] Very cool. You probably don't want to fly it inverted though.......... Strange do do could happen........[>:]
Sorry to hear about your crash EL ****CANO....... That's terrible.... maybe repairable though. Hey Ron, any progress on your ant dilema? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Rob.... The heck with the ant..... Let's eat some fish:-)...... Know U had fun!!
Hey.. It's working..... But taping it to wing, is getting old... I have not changed out the two top cables of the tailwires yet, but will soon, I'm putting together my S.T. and did not use the push/pull setup, so I have what I wanted to add the kevlar string.. I did try another M.G. servo for the rudder with no change:-( Gary... 11lbs11oz..... Thanks :D Makes my "Do" feel light now [8D] Have to get use to getting up before sunrise again....... It's getting HOT HOT........... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Ron, Yeah, fishing was great. I don't eat them though. Yuk! Tastes like mud to me. I just give them away. My brother-in-law smoked some while we were there and they just tasted like smoked mud.
You could be on to something with the tail wire set up. Maybe you've got a metal to metal part that is causing the glitch. [X(] |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
OHHHH itll fly inverted Rob!!!! or else[X(]
yep on the mornings Ron, warming up a little here too, was just thinking about that today while driving through death valley(101deg) but only 96 at home:) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Okay, Rob and Gary, I need an application to the "Inverted Flat Spin Landing Club." I've already paid my dues. Listen up. I crashed my Twist.
I maidened my new Futaba 7CAP radio today, with the Katana .46, 3 long flights. I love the touch, adjustable, of the sticks, and I read the entire 81 page manual, plus FAQs on line while she was charging up--for 18 hours. Then I tried the Twist with the new transmitter. She, too, did well. I was hovering and flat spinning all over. Early in the second flight, the radio beeped at me. Battery low. I landed, left it at idle, turned off the receiver, then the radio. Grabbed my old Futaba 6EXA, made sure it was on the right model, turned on the receiver, checked out the surfaces and took off. I was doing fine, showing Rick how to get into the flat spin. Then, at 300 yards altitude, I put her in an inverted spin with ailerons only, went to zero on the ailerons and held full up on the elevator, first with half throttle, then at idle, then at full throttle. Well... I was losing altitude all this time, of course. At 50 yards, low idle, I decided to get out of the spin. IT WOULDN'T STOP SPINNING. I tried goosing the motor, giving full ailerons and down elevator. Then it was too late, and I just stood there watching her go down, moaning somewhere within, but I think I kept pushing up on the elevator, ailerons at zero. The Twist requires about 5 yards going nose down to pick up enough speed for the control surfaces to work. I didn't do a thing to take her out of that spin. (This is my #8 Twist, about three weeks old, brand new OS 61FX on it.) She hit the ground. Damage? One broken 13x4 APC and a slight bend in the top of the rudder balsa strut. That's all. THAT'S ALL! I checked her out, did a battery check, servos, did a range check from where I crashed [FIRST WITH THE AERIAL DOWN! That place where it hit was 75 yards from the table!], everything worked fine. Somehow the vortices created in that spin wouldn't release the plane. Weird, but I've heard of it before. Good thing Rick was there. Nobody here--or there--would believe me otherwise. So I changed out the prop, fueled up, and took off again, marvelous flight, including inverted flat spins, very high, of very SHORT duration. Now if that doesn't buy me admission to the "Inverted Flat Spin Landing Club," what does it take? At least I don't have to send Horizon another $115.49 for Twist #9. On the new transmitter, the Can Do .46 is model #4, the .60 is #8. J |

Hey Jack.. Glad she made it through well enough to fly again!!
That's the same thing that happened to me on my first spin, I just kept staring in amazement until someone yelled... Ron you better start pulling her out your pretty low, that was about 20' Well she almost made it, but not quite.... But she did fly again after a repair.... Well the "Do's" charging for the AM.... Thought I'd take the S.T. also... But I still have a few small things to get her done, So it'll be this weekend... Come on "Un-Elevator control :( Yes the "Kat" is still laying where I dropped her..... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Ron, what's your secret keeping those 4 strokes happy (running cool) with a cowling?
J |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Ice them down real good:-)).... Oh I have my problems, More so in the AZ heat!!... Have to get
up so as to be at the field when the sun comes out.... But really it's not too bad, as long as you have lots of holes... The "Boss" tells me mine are all in my head [:o]... Not sure in this one has big enough cut outs yet... But I'll find out, and make adjustments as needed..... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
love your ST
haven't flown my UCD in a month or two might this weekend 38 |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Hi guys...
Just got back from some very nice flights with the UCD. You know...they more I fly that plane the better I like it. I just keep getting smoother with it. I was doing the nicest rolling circles and some great hovers today. I'm not into tail touching but I was about 15' up and just holding it there. I thought about going for lunch while I continued to hover but thought better of it. Also this plane will do great waterfalls and flat spins are so easy. Today I was doing them at idle from way up high. I was using full rates on everything and it would just go totally flat and drop in a beautiful slow turning slow falling flat spin. About 20' off the ground I'd snap the throttle on and she's spin like crazy and go up about 20 - 30' and then I'd pull into a hover. It was just flat fun. I don't know what you could ask a plane to do more than that. There is no way I'd even atempt that with my Showtime. Maybe my Mayhem, but that's about it. The more I fly it the more precise I am with it too. I was doing some pretty good knife edge also. My KE needed very little rudder to hold pretty high alpha. Of course the less rudder you use the less coupling you have. I was able to KE the entire length of the field. Anyways, just can't get enough of the Do this year. I have 5 other planes but still fly this one the most. I'm done with the wings on the Giant and have started the fuse. Did I mention this thing is HUGE! Wow! I'm starting to get interested in finishing this thing. I'll probably have it done for next weekend. I need to break in the engine and then go fly it. In a stupor of stupid I ordered a 12Z yesterday. Got it from Chief Aircraft. I didn't need this or even think I wanted it, but suddenly I had punched enough buttons that it was coming. I been reading the manual. I don't even think I'll be able to program it. One thing though, it'll make programming the Giant with the flaps, ailerons, spoilerons and other stuff with 8 servos a bunch easier. Now I just need to get rid of my 9 before my wife finds out I ordered the 12. Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Barry, thanks for sharing that great day in the clouds. When things go right, the engine runs great, the concentration is there, the fingers know what to do, and the bird responds as your Can Do did, we begin to understand how they came to name that bird, hm?
Anyway, well done. And, re: the wife, try telling her you're building a new bird for a quadrapelligic. The sympathy will work on her and she'll help you build it--on the dining room table--if you let her. J |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hi Guys,I have been following this thread for months, picking up on all your tips and knowledge.
I first flew my 46Do about 4 weeks ago and I have her set up great. My set up as follows: Up front:West EurotechT50 and pipe,APC 13X4W,25% morgans coolpower.I have gas flowed the liner and skirted the piston. The motor Tachos at @ 12,700 on the ground and gives @ 9lbs of static thrust.Throttling is fantastic but most of the power comes at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. CofG bang on 6!QUOT!,dry she weighs 51/2 lbs. KE has a lot of coupling from using 1/2 rudder up over. She hangs on the prop all day at just over half throttle, pull out is a little slow. I see that allot of you guys fly with Saito 100,s up front. What is the advantage and handling characteristics of using this motor? Regards,Mark Palmer |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Saito 100, power, fun and more power. It flys fine, just like it did with an OS70, just better and at less throttle. The pull you get out of a hover is what really makes it.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
you also get to run a larger dia prop and it acually gets more air over the wing and flys better all around imo;)
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Well, according to "Brown" my 12Z will be here today. I guess I won't be flying the rest of the summer as I learn to program this radio. Should be interesting.
Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks again for the tips guys.
I have been checking out Saito prices, seems the way to go but,,, West are now doing a tuned 90 FS based on a magnum case. They say bigger valves , extended valve timing, higher compression ratio, large bore carb bolted straight onto the head. They say,, more power than a Saito 100??? big statement to make. Can you tell me what the set up/formula for this style of flying is?? www.3drc.info/media/flights/brianfuntana.WMV When I try a nose up slow approach the wing stalls out.If I try again with more power the plane climbs out?? Thanks,Mark |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
thefunkyhobbit ... The "Do" 46 atleast for me and IMO does not do harriers good.. to much
wing rock, same with H.A. K.E.'s since you need more rudder, and the "Do" tends to couple to much with to much rudder... I'm getting a bit better with harriers and H.A. flight with my "Do" but it takes a bit more stick and setup work... I have tried spoilerons/flaperons and some mixing but I never can keep the throttle setting the same so for me the mixes did not work to my liking so now I just try to fly it.... Then that gets me in trouble [:@] |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
raideron,thanks for your imput.
I agree with the coupling on KE, etc,my "Do" does the same but it has got my stick time improved. Re Harriers : Should I be mixing elevator / spoileron to put all the lift on to the motor power and elevator?.Will the extra air from the prop if I were using a big FS,give the control surfaces a quicker responce at slow speed? Sorry for all the questions but there is no one else in my club attempting 3D style flying. This is a bad thing because I have no experts to ask.It is also a good thing, because when I pull off a 3D manouver everyone watching thinks I,m the muts nutts!!!! LOL! Regards,Mark |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Mark.. True on the "Do" and coupling, I used to use a mix to help it, but have stop
useing it, my new "Do" seems to do K.E. better than the last one.. And I like to just fly it now without the mix.. I was told spoilerons would help some in wing rock by trying to even the lift on the lifting wing?? I tried it but did not like it.. But I may have not worked with it enough.... Using the largest dia. prop that your engine will twist always helps!! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Holy Cow!...
I did a 2 hour session today with the UCD and had a great time. But when I landed the last flight I was inspecting the plane and the right aileron pushrod was broken. Cental Hobbies carbon fiber with titanium ends. Broke right where the end glues into the tube. The tube split and broke and allowed the screw end to come apart. Must have happend right during landing or such. I didn't think you could break one of those arms. In fairness, while this particular plane only has about 24 flights on it the push rods have been on 3 different UCDs. Probably over 100 flights in all. But it shocked me. Also, my muffler came loose. Man, this thing is starting to become a mechanic's nightmare. What's next? Anyways, perfectly calm today. I could hover until it got boring. Rolling circles were nice, easy and smooth. And this new flat spin I'm doing (at idle, very flat and very slow) is just thrilling me. I love to watch that thing float down like a leaf. I even did some fair KE which is saying something with this plane. No mixes, just sticks. Waterfalls are nice and tight with the overpowered YS pulling the tail around. Just spins on the wing. Worst part of the day. Sunburn. When I went back to work everyone asked.... Anyways, having a great time enjoying the hobby. Giant is coming along pretty good. I'm about ready to mount the engine and radio equipment. I'm going to try to fly it next Saturday. Gonna be fun. Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Oh...
Got the 12Z. Yes, it's as hard to program as I thought it would be. I'm gonna try to get it going on the Giant. Try. I got some new amber colored sun glasses. Really help with the glare. Now I can see the plane. Trouble is...now it's scary. Thanks Barry |
