RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Good Job gjeffers!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:DSound like a well built plane! I have been doing a few mods to my ucando. Painted the canopy black and I am moving the batt up into the canopy. Been having problems with the switch and batt being too close. It would some times shut off the switch! Never happened in the air, just when I was in the pits for some reason. Mabey the ucando fairy was trying to tell me something.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)Great job gjeffers!!!!!! Now get a little bigger tank. Eight minutes is just not quite enough time. I use an 11oz and I can fly 13 minutes with just a little extra in case I need to make another pass or something before I land. I'm not even sure where I got my 11 oz tank. It says Hanger 9 on it. It must be from a Twist or something. Anyways, congratulations again,
Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
gjeffers... Great that you had a good day!! I thought you installed a
11oz tank?? Barry... I use NASCAR duck tape over the CA, the silver stands out allowing you to see the running prop better:D |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
gjeffers
Looks like another outstanding build job. Where did you get the tail wire set up or did you make it? Also I was wondering if you use a reverser for one of your elevators? Again, great job on the build and thanks for keeping us updated. Mine is finished as well. I maidened it myself today. ;) I flew okay but I didn't have fun with it because the weather was changing for the worse and it didn't fly good with that much wind. [X(] I had a hard time bring it down. It was really rocking around up there. Also on takeoff the plastic spinner popped off. [:-] Does anyone have a recommendation on an aluminum type? I'm looking forward to a still evening to get this bad boy back into the air.............[8D] |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Forgot to mention........ This new UCD wing rattles even worse than the first one I had. Man! It's ugly. I still parts from the first wing so I might cut the wing open and add another wing rib to each wing to quiet it some. Anyone have other suggestions??

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)CeeGee, Congratulations on your maiden flight. I hate wind, but in Idaho we must fly in the wind or not fly. I use a Higley prop hub instead of a spinner. They don't look real pretty but not all that bad either. They are only 6 or 7 dollars and they work fine. I use them on every plane I have. They are light too, about 3/4 oz. Don't know what to say about your wing noise. Mine does it too. I guess I just don't worry about it. My planes don't usally last that long anyways. Although I must say this year I've got a total of about 45 flights without any crashes. I'm not sure what's up. Anyways, sure enjoy hearing about everybody's UCD experiences.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
WOW, i dont knowwhere to start,i guess ill start with that Crazier than me guy, ive think ive heard of that company Hangar 9 Barry maybe ill order a tank from them;)
Ron, aint got the Hangat 9 tank yet, its in Vegas with my son and he wont be here till next week so i(i mean he)can redo his firewall to install his new saito 91 and then ill have a 11oz tank:) CeeGee,heres where to get the sulivan tail wire set: http://h1069991.hobbyshopnow.com/ser...=ALL&tag=qsrch its a lot of stuff but just click on it and its really a nice set:D OK, now for the BAD news i was really doing great today but like CeeGee the weather was on and off and i had a really good day till my LAST FLIGHT in which i was landing and i got a sheer at about 2ft off the ground which took it straight to the runway and broke,THATS RIGHT! the landing gear, and your right CeeGee,this thing really rattles with this 100, but i love it,(and its altready repaired with 5Min epoxy) and im ready for tomorrow, and if mother nature thinks she will stop me she has another thing comming!!! oh Barry did you get that prop glued yet?[sm=confused.gif] LATER |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
This is what i use on my UCD, fits the wide blade props nicely.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
CeeGee, one thing that I found that was rattling on my ucando was the control surfaces. When I checked them there was just a little bit of slop, not much, just about a 1/16 up and down and I have to replace the rudder servo today with a newer one. When I got them tighten up the humming sound diminished significantly. About the spinner, I had the same thing happen to mine, I had a black one and I thought that it was a wheel that fell off! Now I use a prop nut that looks like a small spinner (can't remember what it is called) that is made from aluminum.
gjeffers, A good trick to help the epoxy on the block is to get a 12 in 4-40 rod and drill two or three holes thru the block next to the bamboo stick that great planes used and epoxy them in there. Hardly any weight and it makes the gear so much stronger. I will post a pick of the ucando with them for you, just have to find the camera. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Golden, are you talking about those 4 little pins on the block that came out? and if so drill straight through the block right next to them and use the 4-40 to repin it?

here is a pic of how I did it.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll get a prop nut. I'd like to get an aluminum spinner but after looking at the prices, Yikes! I have taken and butchered some plastic spinners to fit the wide props but I don't like doing that. I think I'll order up some stuff from Tower including the prop nut and a servo reverser. Do most people use a servo reverser for the elevators or try to program it in their radio? I have a Futaba 9C but the only thing I could determine is that I would need an 8 channel receiver.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Ill run and do that right now Goldenclan, thanks.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)gjeffers: Glad you are liking this plane. How do you think it compares to your 60? I think I like the 46 better but lately I'm flying the 60 just to give it a second chance. Sorry about your landing gear but all UCD owners have to repair that. Now you've got yours out of the way early. That 100 give you enough vertical? Oh, and on the prop repair, I'm going to sew it with HD fly fish leader. I'm drilling seven small holes with 1/16 bit sewing it together, filling with thick CA and then finishing with NASCAR tape as raideron suggested. This will strengthen the joint without pinning and keep the weight down. And yes, I will remember to rebalance. The tape is cosmetic mostly but I do feel it will keep the axile thrust the same without causing in inbalance by having a chunky hole in the prop. This is gonna work, I can feel it.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Goldenclan, That does look like it would help quite a bit. Smart!!
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
a reverser works great CeeGee,i only have a 6 ch jr 631 so i have to but they work in harmony
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Barry, Does that tape come in red?? If so, you'll have a built in visable safety feature.... [X(]
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
i think i would put a carbon fiber safty guard on that Barry:D
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks Gjeffers. I'll order one up. The wifey and I have a fishing trip coming up next week to the other side of the state so I'll only get in a little flying between now and then anyway. I changed one of the control rods to graphite with some graphite rod from Tower and it works OK but I need to do the rest of them.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)CeeGee: With a 9C you don't need the reverser. I also think you only need 7 channel receiver. That's what I use. I have an 8 channel receiver but I think there is one channel empty. I'm going to go in the basement and look up my notes and post them later. But it will be 3 hours or so because I'm off to church and won't be able to post until I return. I do remember having to adjust the linkage to get them to move evenly but it was no big deal. The 9 C will do about anything. I'll try to find some red tape. That would look cool.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks for the help Barry. I don't want to have to buy a reverser if I can help it. I checked the 9C manual and did some experimenting with the open channels and didn't get channel 5 or 6 to work for it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm off to church as well. I'll check back later......[8D]

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
CeeGee,
The Futaba 9C system comes with an 8-channel receiver and has a built in program for using two elevator servos. With this feature you don't have to worry about any mixing switches being in the correct position before you take off. The elevator servos are plugged into channels 2 and 8 and you activate the AILEVATOR function in the menu as described on page 49 in the manual. The aileron travel inside the AILEVATOR menu should be set to 0%. If you don't set them to 0% the elevators will work like those elevators on full size jet fighters. I used to use splitter/reverser cables but I found that the elevators became misaligned after the plane sat in the sun for awhile. There is a screwdriver adjustment on the reverser to realign them but taking the wing off to do it was a real inconvenience. Also, I was uncomfortable after hearing that when a reverser fails that one elevator goes to extreme deflection. Some time ago Servocity.com (a good company to keep an eye on for specials) was selling Futaba R148DF receivers two for $99.99 and I bought four so I could get rid of reversers in my other planes. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
i got it done golden but i used 8-32 rod instead and threaded it and used 5 min epoxy and it looks just like your pics, so if i hit hard enough now to dislodge it ,it will be ugly and ill prob need a new plane anyways;)
Thanks |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Rocketman, Thanks for the info. I bought just the transmitter and not the servos and receiver. Should have bought the whole package. [:-] I'll look into the R148DF and see if I can get one.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)CeeGee. I agree with Rocketman. That is the best way to do the programming and that is how I did mine. I only use 7 channels, including battery, but one of them is in channel 8, and I selected the ailevator feature. However, you would be able to protgram channel 7 to do the same thing. The only difference is you'd have to do the programming instead of selecting a pre program feature. There is an excellent website for futaba (futaba.com, I think) and they address a lot of questions on the website on how to do this stuff. Also, they accept phone calls at no charge to help people with programming. I had to use them quite a bit when I was setting up my Ultra Stick 40 for flaps and also having the flaps act as ailerions. That took a lot of time but they finally got me through it and it worked perfectly. But I think your situation is much simpler and you can probably find the answer on their website. (Web site is: www.futaba-rc.com) Sorry I can't remember much more about the programming as what I do now that I have my planes setup in the radio is I just copy the closed programming to any new model and then just change one or two items and set up the trim. Hardly any programming to do anymore. Anyways, I think you can get this to work with the receiver you have now if you do the programming thing. Also, in the future purchase the 8 channel receivers. They are worth it. I use the PCM version because I like the fail safe features and the tighter tolerances. I think this helps with flutter also. You have twice the resolution with the PCM units as you do FM. Anyways, hope this helps a little bit.
Thanks, Barry |
