mojo / primo setup
Hey guys, just got a primo ordered. I have a few options for setup, or I could buy new. Let me know what you guys have done.
It is a Primo 40. What would you guys do? I have a tower .46, Tower .61, and a Saito .65 GK laying around. I could maybe scratch up a os .70 FS. (the saito is old, tired and needs work, but it will still go on something again though. If I put new bearings, and cleaned this baby up, would it be a good mate?) I have lots of standards laying around, and some 3151 digitals. The 3151's should be plenty, right? (side note: Why can't you use 6V with those?) Hardware? Are most of you using ball links? What landing gear should I get? Thanks for responding! |

Hi Mark, Are you a member of the Profile Brotherhood? If join up and do some research there for lots of help. Just do a google seach on the general internet. You will be talking to the designer and lots of Mojo/Primo fans with lots of advice.

RE: mojo / primo setup
The Primo/Mojo will work find with almost any standard servos but those Futabas would not be my first choice because they're pretty slow and (as you point out) they're not rated for 6V use.
So long as it is reliable and throttles reliably then the Tower46 is probably a good choice. The Saito would be a bit weak and the .61 would be way too heavy. I've not used an OS70FL but I'm thinking that it might also be a bit down on power compared to the Tower 46. As far as hardware goes 4-40 sized hardware of almost any kind will work just fine. I tend to use the Dubro safety-clevises and horns on my birds but I've seen them fly perfectly well with nothing more than piano-wire and Z-bends. On my Mojo 60 I got all silly and used carbon pushrods but I doubt it really made a jot of difference. |

I had an os 55AX on my primo and it had pretty good power. The .46 will work but won't be exceptional. A lot of people are using the saito .82 on this one.

RE: mojo / primo setup
Of the engines you mentioned, the Tower 46 would probably be my first choice. But there are several engines that would be a MUCH better choice for a Mojo/Primo than the Tower 46.
If this is your first 3D plane, the 3151 servos will work OK. Several of us in my local club are running them on 6 volts with no problems. It's worth it to get the extra speed and power. I'm a firm believer in short 2-56 rods with a Z-bend on one end and a DuBro safety clevis on the other. If you need a stiffer pushrod, you can sleeve the 2-56 rod with a carbon tube. If you want to hear my no-holds-barred opinions about your questions you will have to ask over on the Profile Brotherhood website. |
RE: mojo / primo setup
I've been thinking about getting a MOJO. I have a .91 FX two stroker laying around. Overkill?
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Nope... there's guys at our field using Magnum/ASP 91 2-strokers and they work just fine on a Mojo-sized model.
A Saito-100 is the ultimate but there's nothing wrong with an OS91FX if that's what you've got. |
RE: mojo / primo setup
I think it would be a match for the 60 size MOJO, right?
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Yes, the Mojo 60 a 91 is way too big for a Mojo 40 it wouldn't balance properly and the extra weight would adversely affect its flying characteristics.
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Yeah, a .91 2 stroker will be great power on a mojo 60. Would be best to get an after market muffler to get better throttle transition.
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Would you care to recommend any? Tuned piped perhaps? What brand?
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Conventional tuned pipes are great for all out speed but not for 3D applications (Bad Throttle response from idle to mid range).
With the .91 FX, I have personally bought this one: [link=http://www.jettengineering.com/accy/jettstream.html]Jett .91 Tuned Muffler[/link] Mine broke at the header due to too much vibration tho. This one will work as well: [link=http://www.pspec.com/details.asp?ProdID=61&category=8]ultrathrust muffler[/link] |
RE: mojo / primo setup
OK so a MACS tuned pipe is out of the question then. Should I prefer one muffler between the Jett and the Ultrathrust?
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Either one will work about the same. Jett Engineering is here in Houston Texas where I live, so I prefer them :)
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
I use the Tower .75 muffler on my 91 FX. It works great and gives more power and nice transition AND it saves about two oz of the total package. Cheap as hell too, I do not know if they are back in stock at Tower by now
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Sounds really good. Too good to be true actually. Why on earth does this work?
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
There is a lot of debate about if the tower mufflers work as well as the ultrathrust / Jett mufflers. I do know that the tower mufflers work well, but I would not say they work as well as either the ultrathrust or jett.
$60 savings is nothing to sneeze at tho :) |
RE: mojo / primo setup
I've perhaps neglected to mention a really important factor here. I'll be using this plane to learn 3D...
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Heh, well you can't go wrong with the Mojo 60. Make sure you order the MOASS version (still just as stable, but really adds to the performance of the plane) If you don't own a BIG SUV / truck, get the removable wing option...I have a Saturn SUV and it BARELY fits.
IF this is going to be your "Beater" ...you might want to go with the tower muffler and save the good stuff for your next one :) |
RE: mojo / primo setup
This will definitely be my beater. I have a Ford Explorer '97. Ill be getting the removable wing option then just in case and the tower muffler but my concern is that a poor engine transition will adversely affect the performance of the plane to the point which it crimps my learning.
Regarding the things I should order: I don't understand the website completely. At the top of the page there is a Mojo .60 Kit ($90 + shipping). Then at the bottom there are some other options, some which seem redundant like MoJo 60 Removable Wing Kit and MoJo 60 RW Kit, complete. What exactly should I order? |
RE: mojo / primo setup
Thanks for the help guys. I think I will try out the tower engine first.
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
Light wood props help tremendously with transition (Such as the [link=http://www.swanyshouse.com/xoar/props.aspx]XOAR[/link] props), BUT they're so delicate that if you sneeze on them, they break. definitely not good for a beater unless you buy a dozen at a time :)
Just make sure that the engine is reliable and not leaned out too much. It'll have plenty of power. Regarding the things I should order: I don't understand the website completely. RE: mojo / primo setup
I hope so because I fly well over 7500 ft. above sea level and engines tend to lose as much as 30% of total power at this altitude. Thanks for the order pointers, I'll do just what you said.
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
I would think at that altitude, your transition should be better (less air means less work for the engine).
|
RE: mojo / primo setup
That is correct, but less oxygen means less combustion power.
