Ive got that one, you cant see much because of the trees, but can see the smoke from the fire:(

WHat I HEARD, just heard, is that he was a little ahead of the music, and was waiting for a bang in the music or something for a flat spin, but he got too low. Now, thats what I HEARD. I dunno though if it was his radio, or his dual rates.

I heard he was on the wrong rates. Ill watch my vid and see what he says. I do know he says it was pilot error.

Jason, told us he forgot to flip the rate switch. Go figure! :D Low rate was simply inadequate to respond favorably and the smoke signal tells the rest of the story.

I was at the TOC and saw Jason walk off the flight line right after the crash. As he was walking he made a motion to his caller with his finger by the switch. No doubt in my mind that he had realized what had occured. And he shows a LOT of integrity to admit it.

Thanks Mark,
I guess that pretty well clears up any doubt as to what happened.

Yep.. that's correct. Jason forgot to switch to high rates before his Blender and said as much on the podium when we was receiving his award.

Again, explination of TOC crash

Better late than never...I guess. I did already post this, admit it at the TOC and still have the same story today. I hadn't eaten all day, my Grandfather was in a LV hospital having suffered a heart attack the night he got in to LV, and I wasn't in the correct frame of mind the whole day. I did the upright blender at the end of the field, but I was on high rate aileron and rudder, but LOW rate elevator. Watch the video and you can see the up I put in. When I realized what I had done, I went for the high rate switch and in the process I hit the stick into full down. Again realizing I was running out of everything, I went to full up, but I guess the 3-foot rock burm I crashed into was 2 feet too high. I'll post the pic sometime of the crashed pieces that shows the elevator counter balance broken back (up elevator hit). The servo's still aren't stripped (sitting in my garage).

As for the fire...what can I say? Lithium batteries are lithium batteries, doesn't matter the brand. I've blown my little and big electric packs and watched the 6" flames come out of them. Take one of you packs and go throw it at gas soaked rocks and see what happens.

This isn't the first time I've crashed of pilot error (and another time was at the 96 TOC) and when I do have a failure, and someone asks, I tell them what happened. I've got nothing to hide and I guess at times it gets me in trouble.

All i know is Mike McConville crashed at my field here in Avon Park. Right in the Power Lines! Even the best crash, and it was at my field, LOL!:)

Jason, thanks for chiming in. It takes a great deal of character to do what you did. So many times when a crash happens the pilot blames everything but himself. It's refreshing.

Here is a link to video of the crash. You can almost see all of the pull-push-pull.

And a pic of the remains. I don't know why, but my Grandfather wanted the rudder, so he's got it. I haven't been able to trash the rest (have most of the wings too), but I will soon.

Enjoy...LOL

Do I understand correctly?? Why do you want to trash the wings?? Can you send a photo of them??

RE: What is the mostly used radio in TOC

The wing roots were burned in the fire. One wing got the first servo, the other got the 2 inner servos. Still haven't taken the servos out yet.

I've seen you fly at Baton Rouge , that little problem at TOC wouldn't bother me.
If I had a TOC plane you could fly it anytime.

So now I see why you want to throw them out. I wish I had a 40% plane some day. I wish I had a 1.20 plane. Now I had bought a .21 engine and am proud to have it.
But Jason if you want to throw something out just tell me:D

BTW What are you working on at the moment??

RE: What is the mostly used radio in TOC

Well...I was reading the beginning of this thread regarding the most popular radio used by top pilots and I decided to do a very scientific study to see which radio was truly best. The radios used in this study are Futaba, JR, and Airtronics. After careful consideration of all common and unique features to each radio and after thorough flight testing, I came to the conclusion that my flying was equally rude no matter what radio I was using. Therefore, the one variable that truly counts, as mentioned by some other fellow RC pilots, is the pilot themselves. That said, I wonder how I would fly using a Multiplex radio? Hmmm.........

Leon is really proud of that rudder Jason. I noticed it his basement sometime last year when I went to pick the
exhila and asked him about it. He game me all the details of his ordeal in LV and how he ended up with
the rudder lol. That rudder looks almost as new as when it came out of the box.
Hard to believe it was part of a plane that hit rocks and caught fire lol.
It's a great memento of the whole deal, you've got to admit.
