Futaba 9Z-WCII's dominated the field.

Go here for a complete listing.

I may be wrong but I don't the guys at TOC actually choosed one radio over the other. Don't they pretty much use the top radio of who they are sponsered by. So whoever than can get a free radio from is what they are going to use.

That is true, but Im sure a pilot such as Chip Hyde, or Christophe Paysant Le Roux , could have any radio they wanted for free.

Basically it was the top of the line radios from both Futaba and JR, with only one Multiplex, and no showings from Airtronics, Hitec, etc. I would venture a guess that if Chip gave Quique his 9Z and and Quique gave Chip his 10X, it would make little difference ;)

Quique used to fly w/ Futaba radios.. but now is sponsored by JR... so now you see him in MAN telling you that "the JR10'x has made my life much easier and is incredibly east to set-up " and words to that effect... However if memory serve me right... ha won the TOC twice when flyin' Futaba and now that hes flying JR has not won...yet :D it's all about who helps to pay the bills... remember Emmo (Emerson Fitipaldi) creating an uproar when he had a drink of milk instead of orange juice after winning Indy?

Heck, I might convert to futaba if they sent me their best radio for free.... might that is.

I doubt flying one or the other is the difference between winning and losing their.

What would be funny is, if Quique lost his JR contract, and was sponsered by Futaba again, and swallow all that stuff he 'said'.

The larger question is, did he win because he drank milk before the indy, or did he win because he drank orange juice? I'd bet my money on the fact he probably drank Pepsi, and thats why he won :D

I always get a laugh when I hear, "Well if 'brand X' is good enough for (insert latest winner here), then its good enough for me". Fact is, its the flying since they were in diapers, flying a couple days a week, and flying with a purpose and focus that makes the difference. Swap all their gear around, give them a few months to practice with it, and you'd be hard pressed to see the differences.

Did someone say free radios? :)

Unlike Futaba, JR probably paid qui que. I had a well know (finalist)TOC pilot tell me and a friend that futaba wouldn't even give him equipment for his heli. His sponsorship is for airplanes.

Quique was VERY well paid by Futaba and had been for years. In fact, your source (TOC Finalist) is also paid by Futaba.

He switched because he wanted to move somewhere, and Futaba didn't want hime there, or something like that I beleive. Doug probably knows? Its not really important anyways.

I actually don't know the reasons behind Quique's switch to JR. I am certainly happy he did though :D

So Doug, if I wanted to get a couple of free JR servos, to spread there great name around Ireland, who do I talk to? :D:D:D
Robert Telford
Currently Team Futaba, but easily changeable, hint hint.

You would talk to your local JR retailer of course :D

Oh.. you said free.. Hmm.. I don't know. If I did.. I'd talk to them too.. since my stuff isn't free either. :D

Geez, didn't know there was any money in this sport?
How much are we talking?

Not that the money matters anyway, id settle for free radio gear anyday!!!!!!!!, hehe.

I was just watching the video of the 2002 TOC, the Shulman blender stack, just didn't look quite right to me.
I was inclined to beleive the claimed pilot error, but others thought radio failure, this I could not understand, as who would protect the sponsor at the cost of their own reputation?

But if there is $$$$$$$$ involved, now I can understand the pilot keeping quiet about an equipment failure.

Not saying it was an equipment failure, even if it was it would not influence me. JR and Futaba both appear to make great equipment, with brand loyalty appearing to be somewhat ford vs holden mentality. (GM vs FORD? in the states) eh i dunno

Robert,
As for the sponsor, burn alot of fuel and get good enough, that they have no choice but to sponsor you.

Just find a fuel sponsor!!!!!!!!, I have, his name is dad, I build him planes, he buys me fuel, oil rather.
Methanol is cheap, but that dam coolpower aint!!!!!

Yes it was. Milk is the traditional winner's circle drink at Indy.
