Joe,
I Just PM'ed that guy with one for sale with an offer. We'll see if he bites. Chris, I did do a little IMAC with it. It was really, really nice. Keep in mind that it was only the second flight on this plane and was not dialed in at all. Joe was adjusting rates and expo between each flight today. Even so, it was sweet! Great IMAC plane. Great 3D plane. Did I say I want one bad yet!? I cant even imagine how nice it will be once Joe has it tweaked out. A friend of mine in Houston just finished one also and he raves about it. He normally flies a Carden 40% Edge and Carden 35% Cap. |

Whould a ZDZ 80 be a decent substitute for us with thinner wallets? Or is it DA all the way?

What did you do to lighten your new cap, Joe?

Oh... and heat up a coat hanger and hack out half of the foam on the canopy and half of the plywood too. But, don't make it too weak... because after you hack out all the ply on the plane that is under the canopy you have to use the canopy to keep the plane together. I used electrical tape to seal the canopy to the turtledeck today... because the turtledeck was rubbernecking all around.<g> So, even though my canopy is lightened up... it is a structural and necessary part of the plane.<g>
I was doing alot of knife edge tip spins today with major throttle, and alot of blenders, upright flat spins and waterfalls (so was Wayne)... and the plane stayed in one piece. :-) |

How much does it weigh all up?
|

I haven't weighed it yet... but based on my experience with these planes and equipment... I'm guessing 22 to 22-1/2 lbs. :-)

JBH.....
If you really want the Doghouse before I post it to the for sale section......drop me a line......I'll work you a deal.....
As far as the question of the ZDZ 80......the Cap that I watched fly Sat. had tons of power with this motor. To me it is a no brainer......DA 100 9.8 Hp at 5.8 Pounds for $1150.....ZDZ 80 8.5 Hp at 4.3 pounds for $590....... Is 1 Hp and over a pound worth double the price? Not to mention more than double the price due to an extra muffler and more weight? Pug |

wondering if you could show dimensions for engine mount/spacer. thats the only thing i have left to do with mine. thanks

did you use existing holes in firewall or did you just drill new ones for DA-100.
thanks again |

No magic to building the plywood mount. :-) I just used the DA aluminum motor mount as a template. I marked its shape seven times on a piece of 1/4" aircraft plywood. I used a jigsaw to cut it out. I drilled four holes in each piece of ply. Then I used 30 minute epoxy to glue them all together. I lubed up four 1/4" bolts to go through the holes while I glued the ply together to keep everything lined up right. The lube kept the bolts from getting glued in. I used clamps to hold it all together until it dried. I made the seven ply pieces larger than the actual DA aluminum motor mount. Then, after it was all glued together and the glue had cured. I sanded it all down evenly and as small as I thought was reasonable. The final weight of 2oz was acceptable to me.
From there you can also sand it by hand for thrust or to fit the cowl. If you sand too much off... just epoxy on another piece. :-) As for lining up the engine bolts through the firewall so that the spinner lines up with the cowl... I use the old ladder trick. I put the fuse alongside a ladder... putting the landing gear on top of the ladder. Then I put the engine with mount attached on top of the firewall... then I mount the cowl. I move the engine around until it lines up perfectly with the cowl. Then, I mark it and drill one hole. I mount the engine with one bolt and check it all out. If it's good to go I drill the last three holes and bolt her down. You can also just measure and mark. I've done that before too with good results. But, the ladder method gets you to fit perfectly with the cowl. The wood spacer allows for easy sanding to adjust or change engine thrust angles, too. |
