easiest to hover. Hype or Cougar?
Ok, they both hover easily. The cougar is better to learn on because it will withstand much more accident damage (i'm assuming you're wanting to learn to hover??) and also easier to repair, whilst the hype is much better for torque rolling and 3d stuff. You could learn on a hype, but be sure to have lots of power to get out of trouble if it comes to that. The west 50 combo seems to offer that.
If you already can hover then go straight in for the hype! |

Cougar...
Arnie I will not entertain you by answering this question in relation to the Hype... I know why you are posing the question.. What I can say is that whilst there are other fun flys that are easier to learn to hover on initially, namely those that keep light and have a semi symet wing unlike the cougar, the cougar is not that much more difficult to learn on and you get a whole lot of other performance from that wing that you dont with the others to boot. Ive flown a few of these high wing fun flies and pound for pound, all things considered, the Cougar 2000 is streets ahead... Until something better comes along I will always have a Cougar on standby. Its not just about hovering either.... Other strengths in my view are; They go well in windy conditions... strong enough to hack about like a WOT 4 at full chat. They can be used to teach people... I have mine set up on Buddy box nice and smooth and it works well... PLUS, as tutor you can talk your your student through getting themselves out of impossible situations so they learn quicker... knowing that in the last 20 feet you can have full power ready and yank yourself out of trouble with no risk of the model breaking up. Electric conversion is easy and it actually works... prettiest model of its type Ive seen... and lets face it these model types are not exactly stunners as far as lines go... but the Coug Scheme looks pretty cool. Well done to whoever chose the scheme. They torque roll reasonably well... you really can learn to torque roll on it.... get it sussed on a cougar and you should be able to do it on anything else. They are pretty strong... could be lighter perhaps but then at a cost and unless your into competition standard its not necessary and then you would probably build your own from scratch anyway. Things I dont like about it ? None now... they got fixed after the first batch.... How does that sound ? |

seemed like an odd q thats all.... dont mean nothing else.....
robert ala i think the capiche is best at lot of things but its not best for prop hanging... just been doing some work on a new design of control horn for 3D use.. sorry im going of topic... anyone reckon there is anything better in its class than the cougar ? all up, all things considered.. if there is i aint seen it! |
easiest to hover. Hype or Cougar?
Yup there is, definately. Its owned by Kunte and it's a modified limbo dancer. Its not very often now that I get to watch people flying and remain amazed, Kunte's limbo dancer was really controllable and hovered easier than anything else i've ever tried, apart from the funtana!
I have pics but theyre not very good to see the design. Maybe Kunte has some close ups of it? |

Interesting. what mods?
|
easiest to hover. Hype or Cougar?
not a proper comparison though is it....
Like for Like... I dont believe there is anything better... |
easiest to hover. Hype or Cougar?
why is it not a proper comparison? id have said it is, just because the mods arent commercially available so to speak.
Well we'll let Kunte describe them, but it comprised of a different fuselage and tailplane. |

I'm also a big fan of the Cougar. I stuffed mine quite badly doing silly things too near to the ground last year, but like Archie I always like to have one kicking around. My new one's got an Irvine 39 on and pound for pound its fantastic. The abuse they can take is great (seen fellow club mate with Irvine 40 powered 11 x 7 doing full chat aeros a la Wot4 etc for 10 minutes!) I even learned to TR on mine too, so all in all a great model! Am teaching the wife to fly on it too!

I had a cougar and i had mine for 2 years now and its had no crashes and still in mint conditions and its had lots and lots of flights...Ive now sold it for £30 with engine and i then got a 3styla and i love the 3styla. But cougar does hover the best

crikey brains how many times have we seen those shots LOL...
Nathan I say its not a fair comparison because Kunte had to modify it - substantially by the sound of it - to get the result he has. Like for Like is ARTF out the box... bog standard... |
Cougar
Cougar Cougar Cougar
It vertially inderstuktable. 2nd flight the batery whent flat on my in a vert dive. apart from a few cracks, proken prop and the servo tray was knoked out (all very minor damage, all fixable with thin cyno apart from the prop LOL) it survived. I have a 10x5 prop running on a irvine 36, i bought it off a mate for 115 quid: plane, 2 U/Cs, irvine 36, throttle pipe and a few outher bits aswell....Bargin He knows Alan weston uk man and he got a newone with a complimentary west 36 and pipe. it absolutly balistic. climb a bit, start a torque roll, add full power, ailerons to right, up elevator and left rudder, wiggle the aileron a bit and your in an inverted climbing flat spin. The cougar is also the undesputed best at fun flying. the pointed LE makes it sail around for 10 minutes or so from a 30 second climb. Torque rollings easy, just need to make it lie on its back about 5-10 degrees. Trust me, my cougar's been through alot of hard times. and, even though a bit tatty, flies a treat. If you dn't already have one, get a cougar with a west 36t1 and a APC 11x3 prop.......................7.5lbs of thrust on a model which weighs 3lbs.........................BO'SELECTA Ian |

hi all
ive got both the cougar and the hype i love both planes.. the cougar has a OS 50 sx+throttle pipe and the hype has the west combo :) i learnt to fly with the cougar in april this year had loads of fun,im still learning to hover and do 3d.. i smashed the cougar in the floor about a month ago while hovering about 15ft up then it went inverted(im not good with inverted) and i broke the firewall to bits along with the prop an stuff..repaired it only took 5 hrs and its as good as new i think they are both great and would recommend them to anyone |

I've seen Kuntes limbo and from what i remember its got the elevator servo in the back, right next to the tail. Or was it the rudder servo. Or both. Hmm it seems i don't remember after all! Having seen Kunte fly he is very impressive at prop hanging and torque rolling, and this seems to be his favourite type of flying, usually accounting for over half the flight. He may therefore have a very rearward CG (and compromise the set-up for other manoeuvres) which may account for the stability of it (and why everything is clagged on the back). Then again maybe not. Maybe Kunte will tell...

Perhaps we should ask RCAdmin for our own British 3D forum LOL. (Don't worry Robert, we'd let you in!!!!).
Currently scratch building a funfly (just to see if I can, probably will fly like a pig, then I'll buy a Cougar). My current funfly is a DSM Merlin. Useless, IT DOESN'T SPIN !!! :stupid: Still, crashed on sunday (lining up for a low inverted pass, bug lands on sunglasses, right hand comes of tranny to swipe it, and oh dear, plane in the field). Only minor damage, but not sure if I can be bothered to repair it seeing as I plan to replace it. As for the original question, don't know, haven't had either. We haven't had any cougars at our field, and the only hype is no more, the elevator and stab folded. |

easiest to hover. Hype or Cougar?
Torque rolling was a little hard without ailerons. the small (10x5) prop made this happen
