We have seen muffler temps go as high as 700 degrees and enough to melt most locking agents. We now use a cement that is good for 2100 degrees, so far no problems. You can get some of the powder paint as high temp (a lot higher than 500) and it is usually expensive , you might scorch or discolor the 500 degree temp paint. This depends on the engine, some of them run very cool.
