P-51, F4U Corsair, F8F Bearcat, etc., all used gear reduction units. I'm sure there are/were many more.

As I said in my first response, try it for yourself and see if YOU like it. In the end, that is all that really matters. The three bladed props do look nice on a model and all of the theory in the world never made me smile the way a good looking model makes me smile.
