Default Eflight Esc Question

I purchased a new Eflight 20a esc to replace the burned out unit in my Typhoon. I did not connect the engine leads, but I hooked it up to my reciever. The servos were also conected to reciever. When I plugged the batter in, the esc did not beep but the servos went full travel in the opsite direction. My question is since the esc did not beep, is there a problem with the esc? I am using a 3s lipo when I plug it in. The original esc melted on the sixth flight. I might have cooked my reviever as well, but I am worried since the esc did not beep when I plugged it in. I am using a GWS reciever that worked perfectly until the melt down. I was also worried about hooking up the motor before I program the esc to lipo batteries. I dont know if I fried the motor as well.
