Keeping it simple while starting out is usually a good idea. Electrics are a good way of keeping it simple and yet being able to enjoy the hobby.
Check out the link for a good entry level electrick stadium off road truck that has many hop ups already included. It's a good truck...at a good price....and will offer you hours of enjoyment. I know....I have one of these.
