I will measure one of the washers I used, but I'm sure they are not even that thick. Probably more like 1mm. It is very close to fitting without shimming.

I was in the same situation, I dont currently own a starter box and will convert at a later date. It is my understanding that the back plate is only a few dollars but there is some modifications needed to the crankshaft.
