It's my understanding that before the U S Air Force came into existance in about 1947, airplanes were known as Pursuit aircraft and received the "P" designation. After the U S Air Force came about they were re-designated with an "F" for Fighter. Hence the P-51/F-51, P-82/F-82, P-80/F-80, etc.
