RE: does changing oil mix change tune on DA-50?
Joeairport,
During my oil testing of different brands and mixes, the only 2 situations where I had to richen the mixture was amsoil 100:1 at 100:1 and Belray. Since Belray was the only oil which formed no carbon, I concluded that the oil was not burning and the richer needle settings were required to replace the power normally attained from the combustion of the oil. There is more calories (power) per gallon with oil (think diesel trucks) than gas. The same situation of having to richen the needles was required with Amsoil 100:1 at 100:1 but not mixed at 50:1. The carbon formation at 100:1 was less than when mixed at 50:1 but the mixture also had to be richened to achieve the same rpms under load as the other oil combinations.
It seems counter to most conclusions because most people don't consider the combustion of the oil.
There are two impacts of more oil. First of all, more oil gives a better seal of the ring and therefore more efficient use of the energy from the combustion. The second impact is the increased combustion of the oil. More oil may allow you to close the needles a bit. There is a point where more oil does not combust and the impact is only a better seal of the rings.
Hope this helps
