Sounds like a fouled glow plug. It happened to me while trying to start my LST2 for the first time. If you're taking your glow plug igniter off and it's dying that means your glow plug is not staying hot cherry red. While your glow plug igniter is on, the glow plug will stay hot enough to keep your engine running. Try replacing your glow plug and see where that gets ya.
