what helicopter?

I think that switch you are flipping is "idle up" or "Idle 1." If the helicopter is a ccpm(collective pitch helicopter with a 120 degree 3 servo swashplate, then you don't really have a "fixed pitch mode, as the pitch should change as the headspeed increases.

Doing radd's school is for normal mode, and not idle-up mode.

Also, you should never switch the helicopter to "idle up" when the rotor is not spinning. the quick engagement will cause the tail to swing wildly, and possibly harm the main gear... not to mention that when the throttle stick is at 0% or all the way down, the idle up pitch would put the blade pitch at -10 degrees. That will push down on the helicopter, and could cause part failure resulting it a massive mess of spinning and shooting carbon fiber and composite, leading to the loss of an eye. Wear safety glasses. It's all fun and games until someone looses an eye.
