Yeah I will be taking it nice and slow learning to fly, following Radds technique.
I am a bit more interested in what, in terms of mechanically, should I first do right out of the box in terms of making sure everything is right and adjusted properly. Things to check over, tighten, etc...

Check out bladecprepair.com. You'll learn a lot and you can learn to balance the blades and set up your head, swash and tracking. Very important before you try flying to eliminate mechanical errors. You'll have your share of brain farts, why allow poor setup to add to the problems
