I've used both Aeromarine and Hughey flex cables for years with zero problems. We thought that we had finally gone through one Saturday but it was just a loose flex cable collet on my sons boat.
The smallest thing that I've seen used as a hook for on a boat for retrieving was a bra hook. Go ahead and snicker as I did too but it must have worked!
