Sounds like it was hydro locked, removing the glow plug and spinning the excess fuel out should have been fine. If you are running synthetic oil it shouldnt be any problem, if you are using something with castor in it you might want to open it up and see if you have it gummed up, fresh fuel should flush it out if you do.

Also might want to pop the piston out and see that you didnt damage a ring or the rod or something and that the fan is tight and not allowing the crank shaft to rub on the backplate.
