I'm gonna have to go with chubby on this one. it definitely got crazy hot. possibly fuel pooled up inside the pipe from running rich, then he leaned it out and it got hot enough to ignite the fuel in the pipe? I REALLY don't have any idea, and I don't think that Darin would be too keen on letting me experiment to try to make the same thing happen in one of our cars, LOL.
Worst case scenario, though, as long as the car still runs, you just need a coupler...and to upgrade to the aluminum exhaust
