Not to be too technicial here, but sand is abrasive not corrosive. The finer the dirt the more places it can go and act abrasive on parts, that's why you should clean your bearings once and a while. Sand seems like it would be worst because of its abundance but it is less likely to cause ill fate. The air filter is very critical and a two stage filter should be used in sand.
